NATURE AND PURPOSE
The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to research projects in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the biomedical expertise and knowledge necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade his/her competency. The Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance and direction of a research mentor in a substantial full-time program of advanced research and training beyond the doctoral level, in preparation for an independent career. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it, automatic Principal status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
As an Assistant Project Scientist, you will help to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. You will be expected to assist in writing proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations to obtain research funding. For the funded projects, you are expected to execute the proposed experiments. That includes trouble shooting and use of alternative approaches. You are also expected to work with other laboratory members to conduct team research using multidisciplinary approaches. You are expected to be productive and published at least two papers per year in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, you are expected to generate reports and deliver scientific presentations as well as engage in teaching and mentoring post-doctoral fellows and other students in the lab. Duties/responsibilities will include: • Bioinformatics analysis of omics data, including single cell omics. • Aid the Principal Investigator in scientific leadership and coordinate teamwork in biomarker discovery. • Document organization and record keeping. • Data collection, organization and analysis. • Manuscript writing. • Grant writing and preparation • Presentation in international or national meetings • Laboratory management including protocol design and standardization, trouble shooting, equipment maintenance, chemical inventory, laboratory safety, etc. • Mentoring and educating trainees in the laboratory.

This position may require night and weekend coverage as needed by specific studies. Primary work site location is the University of California, Davis Medical Center- Clinical Research Building.

RESEARCH (90%) The candidate will be expected to conduct biomarker research in the UC Davis Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and the national Diverse VCID Project. The candidate will use his/her expertise to design and execute biomarker approaches, protocols, and optimize quantification and analytic methods. The candidate will also be assigned to analyze omics data generated from biomarker or basic science laboratories. The scientific goal is to develop new methods of disease detection that can be translated to clinical practice to improve healthcare and medicine. Projects span biochemical, biophysical, computational, and biological sciences and involve multidisciplinary collaborations. A successful candidate must have experience and knowledge in bioinformatic analysis of omics data (e.g. CHiP-seq, RNA-seq, glycomics, glycoproteomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, etc.) at both bulk or single cell levels, and substantial experience in biochemical and molecular approaches to study diseases such as molecular modeling. Experience and knowledge in pathology, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders is preferred. Publication (10%) Candidates will be expected publish and present research results in peer-reviewed journals, books, scientific conferences under the supervision of the PI and other members of the research team. Contract and Grant Acquisition (10%) The candidate will assist in acquiring grants from federal and state agencies as well as other funding organizations. The candidate will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by funding agencies. The candidate will interact with funding agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10%)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to their specific field of bioinformatics, biomarker discovery, and quantitative chemistry. The candidate is required to attend meetings with NIH officers and collaborating investigators. The candidate will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars or international conferences to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
• PhD degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Physics, Computational Science, or related field
• Post-doctoral training and peer-reviewed publications
• Excellent English writing and communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in Bioinformatics and Computational Modeling
• Demonstrated knowledge or experience in applying techniques to biological systems
• Possess good inter-personal skills and is a team player
• Experience in grant writing and submission
• Accountable and proactive
