Position description

Assistant/Associate Professor of Clinical Livestock Medicine and Surgery

SALARY: Dependent on qualifications and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS: Veterinarian (DVM or equivalent) with advanced training in livestock medicine and surgery is required; masters or doctoral degree in a basic science discipline is preferred. Board certification or credentials accepted by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, American College of Veterinary Surgeons or equivalent is required. Clinical experience and competence in livestock medicine and surgery is required. Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching livestock medicine/surgery is required. Demonstrated interest/aptitude in an area related to evidence-based approaches and strategies or research for application to individual animal medicine in organic animal agriculture, dairy/beef cattle, small ruminants, and pigs; or other research focus areas including antimicrobial stewardship, infectious diseases, food safety, pharmacology, and medical education, is desired. Must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in California is required before employment begins (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals without a full California license must obtain a University License (California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1) by the time of appointment.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical: The position includes a 70% (Professor of Clinical X series) clinical commitment to the Livestock Medicine and Surgery Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Individual will be responsible for 1) directing, instructing, and supervising veterinary students and residents; 2) providing medical and surgical service to livestock patients that include organically raised livestock and; 3) advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.

Teaching: The primary teaching responsibility will be direct daily supervision and clinical instruction of senior veterinary students rotating on the livestock medicine and surgery service. Other responsibilities include: 1) participation in lectures and laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum, including new evidence-based material appropriate for organic livestock agriculture; 2) clinical teaching in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH); and 3) participation in the graduate clinical training program of the VMTH.

Professional Competence: Will advance the discipline of livestock medicine and surgery within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. Expected to establish reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally, and nationally, depending upon level of appointment. Must demonstrate clinical competence and be recognized for accomplishment in a focused area of clinical practice.

Creative Scholarship: Faculty in the Professor of Clinical X Series are expected to advance the clinical discipline through creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation in peer-reviewed publications. Creative/scholarly activities are required for individuals in this series, but in view of the increased responsibilities for clinical service and teaching, the type of scholarly activity may focus primarily on integrating/improving clinical care, conducting clinical research studies, and/or improving veterinary medical education.

If the successful candidate has research interests aligned with the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) and its mission-oriented research, a split appointment as an Agronomist in the AES is possible.

Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, and other appropriate means is required. Active participation and engagement in developing/maintaining continuing education activities of the VMTH as it relates to livestock medicine and surgery is required.
