Position description

Clinical Diagnostic Bacteriologist. Asst/Assoc/Full Professor of Clinical Diagnostic Bacteriology in the California Animal Health & Food Safety Laboratory System (CAHFS) and Department of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis. The successful candidate will be in residence at the CAHFS laboratory on the UC Davis campus. Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience.

DVM with advanced degree or training in bacteriology required. Two years of experience in diagnostic bacteriology preferred. Board certification or eligibility by the American College of Veterinary Microbiology preferred. Mycology and parasitology experience preferred. Demonstrated interest in avian and/or livestock diseases required. Demonstrated ability in traditional microbial isolation and identification, including technological advances in classical microbiology, as well as experience in molecular diagnostics required. Demonstrated interest, aptitude, and capability in advancing microbial diagnostic disciplines, disease investigation, and diagnostic interpretation required. The successful candidate will have: i) excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively communicate with veterinarians, producers and government agencies; ii) client-focused, service-oriented approach to diagnostics; iii) demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere, and iv) demonstrated (or potential) accomplishment in areas contributing to diversity and inclusion. The candidate will function as a diagnostic bacteriologist in the CAHFS laboratory located on the UC Davis campus. The incumbent provides scientific and procedural oversight for bacteriology, mycology and parasitology testing performed in all four CAHFS laboratory locations. The diagnostic caseload includes predominantly livestock and avian species with an emphasis of disease conditions affecting food animal species. Interaction with veterinarians, producers, and national networks (e.g., NAHLN, VetLIRN) is an integral part of this position. Creative use of diagnostic case material and development of innovative approaches in diagnostic bacteriology resulting in peer reviewed publication is essential. The incumbent will have limited teaching activities, which may include didactic and case-based presentations to veterinary students, graduate students, and residents as well as outreach activities for client education. University and public service through departmental, school and university committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate activities is required.
