The Department of Plant Sciences is seeking a Junior Specialist in plant physiology to work at the Zwieniecki Lab.
The position will involve conducting laboratory and field research aiming to understand the roles non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) play in tree and orchard performance. The research is framed by a large CA-state-wide study called the Carbohydrate Observatory focused on the physiology of NSC in diverse tree nut species.
The Junior Specialist will work under the supervision of Paula Guzmán Delgado and Maciej Zwieniecki and is expected to coordinate and interact with project collaborators from UC Davis, growers, and other people working in the lab. The successful candidate will be actively involved in publishable research activities, participate in research planning, implementation, analysis, and data interpretation, with opportunities for co-authorship or acknowledgement in publications. Applicants are expected to have interest in research related to plant physiology and horticulture. Previous lab experience is highly valuable.
The duties include:
A. Research in specialized areas (90%)
- Analyze NSC (sugars and starch) content in woody tissues using mechanical and chemical methods.
- Collect twig samples in almond, pistachio and walnut research trials and orchards across the Central Valley of California.
- Assist with coordination with project collaborators for sample collection.
- Analyze and interpret data.
- Assist other lab personnel in coordination of procedures, including sample collection, organization and analyses.
- Assist with lab and equipment maintenance.
- Mentor undergraduate students.
- Collaborate on study designs.
- Participate in discussions with the supervisors about data interpretation, bringing to the table new ideas for potential improvement.
- Contribute to the production of scholarly manuscripts and/or extension and outreach material.
B. Professional Competence and Activity (5%)
- Attend seminars on topics related to plant physiology, agronomy or horticultural science.
- Attend extension meetings and conferences organized by the growers, commodity boards and stakeholders, e.g. The Almond Conference or Statewide Pistachio Day.
- Participate in training programs to enhance knowledge and skills.
C. University and Public Service (5%)
- May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.
- Lead tours and give presentations to delegations of visiting scientists and industry representatives.
a. Bachelor’s degree in Plant Sciences, Agriculture or a closely related field (degree required at time of appointment)
b. Valid driver’s license (and capability of driving long distances)
c. Decisive and flexible, capable of thinking and working independently, and collaborative
d. Creative, with an eagerness to learn, and organized
e. Have good communication skills
f. Previous experience working in a lab
g. Previous experience working in the field
h. Capable of multitasking
Salary: $44,500/year (this is a 100 % appointment for one year with the potential to extend based on performance and funding availability).
