Position description

The position of Assistant Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. The Assistant Specialist stays apprised of emerging issues and problems and maintains technical competence in the designated area(s) of specialization. Within this defined area and when appropriate the Assistant Specialist is expected to provide leadership, facilitate teamwork and develop collaborative relationships with colleagues and to supply input into the planning of research and educational programs. Normally, Assistant Specialist does not have Principal Investigator (PI) status but may obtain permission by exception and/or collaborate with a PI in preparing research proposals for extramural funding. The Assistant Specialist is evaluated for merit and promotion using three basic criteria outlined below.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE
I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (80% EFFORT)
A. Work under the direction of the Dr. Guobao Wang on research projects. Collaborate with personnel affiliated with research activities involving the EXPLORER total-body PET/CT scanner on studies. This includes translating quantitative imaging techniques to improve clinical diagnosis, prognosis and therapy response assessment in various diseases. Contribute to conducting clinical research, including scheduling and coordinating the scans. Learn how to analyze medical images. Participate in lab meetings and conferences to present research, provide timely feedback on project progress to the PI and to adhere to all relevant regulations. Evaluation of performance in research activities is subject to the applicable individual project in specialized areas, as documented by any of the following:
• Conference abstracts and publications that acknowledge the Junior Specialist's significant and meaningful contribution to the work such as Physics in Medicine and Biology, IEEE Transactions on Radiation and Plasma Medical Sciences, IEEE Transaction on Medical Imaging, Journal of Nuclear Medicine.
• Conference abstracts and publications on which the Junior Specialist is an author such as Physics in Medicine and Biology, IEEE Transactions on Radiation and Plasma Medical Sciences, IEEE Transaction on Medical Imaging, Journal of Nuclear Medicine.
• Other evidence (e.g., letters from collaborators or principal investigators) that work done by the Junior Specialist contributed to publishable research.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (15% EFFORT)
• Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations including the Nuclear Medicine Journal Club.
• Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)
• May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.
• Participate in activities of committees within the department, college, campus and other University entities including Nuclear Medicine Research Operations Committee (NMROC).

Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering or related field, with a minimum of 1-year experience in statistical data analysis research. Other basic qualifications include experience in working with mathematical or statistical software programs (R and MATLAB) and statistical machine learning, performing critical analysis of experimental data and review of the scientific literature, and maintaining detailed experimental or laboratory records. Experience in medical images is a plus.

This position is open effective March 30, 2021 with an initial review date of April 13, 2021; however, the position will remain open until filled or June 30, 2021.
