The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of California, Davis invites applications from qualified candidates for four Junior Specialist positions in the Next Generation Networking and Computing Systems laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications:
• The candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, engineering or computer science field, or equivalent research experience.
• Ability to work cooperatively within a diverse environment
• Good understanding of computer architecture and parallel programming
• Coding experience with Matlab, C++, Python or similar programming languages and C/C++
• Good communication skills

Preferred Qualifications (in any combination):
• Proven track record of programming.
• Experience with RISC-V processors and Verilog.
• Experience with participation and dissemination of scientific results in international conferences and workshops
• Good understanding of optoelectronic device physics
• Experience with Optical simulation using Lumerical, COMSOL, and other software.

Job Summary:
Four positions are available in the Next Generation Networking and Computing Systems laboratory, University of California Davis, led by Professor S.J.Ben Yoo. The lab is focused on understanding how photonic integrated devices can transform and revolutionize computing architectures to enable next generation scalable, energy-efficient and agile computing systems. Under the direction of the PI, the candidate is expected to collect, organize, and present data, engage in lab meetings and discussions on research, and assist in the interpretation and publication of those data. The candidate will be mentored regarding career paths in academia or industry or National laboratories, and be supported to present data at conferences and contribute to the publication of peer reviewed manuscripts as a lead author.

The position of Junior Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. Junior Specialists are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. Junior Specialists are also expected to participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations as well as review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications as applicable related to their research area of expertise.

Major Responsibilities:
Research (90%):
• Using architectures enabled by the photonic technologies developed in the PI’s lab, apply cutting edge computational approaches and innovative solutions for running large-scale application with sparse data structures and benchmark their performance against conventional computing systems

or
• Conduct various silicon photonic device simulations, design, and layout for realizing optimal performance. This may involve multi-physics simulations involving photonic, electronic, thermal mechanisms, and Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods.
• Assist the PI with preparation of grant proposals.
• Present research results during lab meetings
• Present work formally to the team weekly to discuss progress.

Professional Competence and Activity(5%):
• In collaboration with PI and other lab personnel, support the writing and reviewing of manuscripts and presentation of data at conferences
• Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations.
• The candidate will have opportunities to present abstracts describing his/her work at international meetings and be first author on key publications of his/her work.

University/Public Service (5%):
• Help to organize meetings, workshops and public outreach events in computer science.
• Participate in activities of committees within the department, college, campus and other University entities, as appropriate.
