Position description

QUALIFICATIONS: Veterinary medical degree (DVM or equivalent), clinical experience, and competence in applied reproduction and herd health of multiple livestock species (cattle, sheep, goats, swine) are required. Experience and clinical competence in goat and sheep reproduction, infectious disease control and preventive programs at the herd/flock level is required. Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching mixed livestock species reproduction and herd health-related curricula is required. An advanced degree (PhD preferred) in an area related to livestock reproduction, infectious disease, or epidemiology is required. Board certification or completion of training or the requirements for board certification in the American College of Theriogenology, American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine or equivalent is required. Other relevant specialty colleges may be considered. Continued appointment beyond the 4th year requires board certification. Documented research record (Associate/Full) or strong potential to develop an independent research program in livestock theriogenology, infectious disease or a herd health-related discipline and evidence of/potential for securing extramural funding are required. Individual must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere. Leadership skills are preferred; leadership experience would be required for candidates at Associate/Full Professor rank. A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in California is required before employment begins (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals without a full California license must obtain a University License (California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1) by the time of appointment.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical: The position includes a 50% clinical commitment to the Livestock Herd Health & Reproduction Service of the VMTH. Responsibilities include: directing, instructing, and supervising veterinary students and residents; providing clinical veterinary reproduction and herd health ambulatory services to dairy goat, meat goat, sheep, dairy, beef and swine herds and flocks; providing in-hospital clinical reproductive services and case management (including breeding soundness evaluation, large and small ruminant artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis, management of fertility and infertility [including abortion]); designing infectious disease control and judicious medication use and traceability; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.

Teaching: Responsibilities include participation in: 1) lectures, laboratories, and other educational activities in the DVM curriculum; 2) clinical teaching in the VMTH; 3) graduate clinical (resident) training; and 4) in applicable campus graduate academic programs (MPVM, MS, PhD).

Professional Competence: Must demonstrate clinical competence in the veterinary practice of livestock reproduction and herd health within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care at the individual and herd level. Expected to establish a reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally, and nationally. Must demonstrate superior clinical competence and be recognized for accomplishment in a focused area of clinical livestock practice.

Research: The development of a creative, independent, and productive research program in small ruminant applied reproduction, infectious disease, or herd health is expected, including publication of results in peer reviewed professional/scientific journals. Individual will provide leadership in directing research projects for residents and graduate students. If the successful candidate has research interests aligned with the Agricultural Experiment Station (AES) and its mission-oriented research, a split appointment as an Agronomist in the AES is possible.

Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education, outreach to livestock commodity groups, and other appropriate service activities is required.
