The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses specialized knowledge in analytical chemistry, engineering, and molecular biology including the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor , Professional Researcher , Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception. This position will also serve as the Project Leader and will be responsible for the direction and conduct of the research group within NIEHS Superfund Research Program.

Research Activity 60%
Under the direction of Dr. Bruce Hammock, the incumbent will make creative contributions to and participate in collaborative development of an active research program (s) in the fields of analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and environmental chemistry with particular emphasis on the development and use of novel biological reagents and tools. The incumbent will be key personnel on research grants involving the development and use of new methods for the detection of biomarkers for human health assessment and treatment options; detection and monitoring of environmental contaminants and corresponding biomarkers of human exposure. The position will require the incumbent to take a leadership role in biochemistry and analytical chemistry, employing techniques such as enzyme -linked immunosorbent assay, phage-display technology and biosensors. The incumbent will also be responsible for leading research efforts that involve community based participatory research methods.
The incumbent has a critical role in establishing connections with Regional and National EPA, USGS offices, and communicating scientific findings to and establishing working relationships with local/state/Tribal health and environmental departments.
The incumbent is expected to participate in technology transfer effort by assisting with filing the patents, licenses, Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer Research grants.
The incumbent has assumed responsibility for managing the US-Egypt grant in the laboratory administered through the US National Academy of Sciences.

Publication 10%
The incumbent will publish research results in peer reviewed publications, either independently or in collaboration with the Pl and other members of the research team.

Grant Acquisition 10%
The incumbent will contribute to the development of grant proposals for funding from appropriate agencies and prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by funding agencies. The incumbent may serve as a Principal Investigator by exception.


The incumbent will interact with the laboratory research group, students and international visitors. Communicate research data and results orally and in writing. Conduct presentations of research at scientific meetings. Training, consulting and advising predoctoral graduate students and postgraduate researchers within the department on their substantive research problems related to experimental design and implementation. Other duties will include organization of seminars and lab presentations when appropriate and reviewing research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications.


The incumbent will engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the general public and providing relevant advice to individuals and public agencies. The incumbent will engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service.

The incumbent will be consulting with fellow Researchers and/or Industrial Partners on projects not related to her own research.
