Position description

The Academic Coordinator for the Center for Child and Family Studies (CCFS) provides administrative oversight for Early Childhood Laboratory (ECL) programs, CCFS outreach programs, and the educational and community service programs of the larger CCFS. The Academic Coordinator works closely with the CCFS Faculty Advisory Committee Chair to coordinate the education, service and outreach components of the CCFS and to facilitate the onsite research and participant recruitment approved by the faculty committee. The Coordinator reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Human Ecology, thereby supporting the success of the departmental missions. This is a 100% appointment, with an annual appointment period of nine months.

Academic Coordinators are appointees who administer academic programs that provide service closely related to the teaching or research mission of the University. This service may be provided to academic departments, to organized research units, to students, or to the general public. Determination of the appropriate level for an appointment for an Academic Coordinator shall take into consideration such factors as program scope and complexity. The duties of an Academic Coordinator are primarily administrative. Individuals in an Academic Coordinator title who are assigned research or instructional duties are required to hold a dual title.

Areas of responsibility include:

Program Administration/Fiscal and Facilities Management (50%)

  • Responsibility for compliance with California state licensing requirements for operation of a childcare center
  • Achievement of national accreditation status through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and responsibility for accreditation maintenance and renewal
  • Creation and periodic updating of ECL handbooks, policies and procedures, forms, guidelines, position statements and CCFS website content
  • Editorial responsibility for information (printed and electronic) disseminated about all child/family programs at the CCFS by its teaching and administrative staff, including classroom websites, newsletters, handbooks, and statements representing the lab school
  • Oversight of CCFS undergraduate education programs and of ECL use as a site for other UC Davis education, observation and training purposes
  • Facilitation of HDFS approved onsite research projects and research participant recruitment
  • Program development of ECL curriculum and practices consistent with current evidence-based practices and new research in the fields of child development and early education
  • Responsibility for and supervision of department approved CCFS outreach programs serving children and families
  • ECL budget oversight and periodic rate review participation, in collaboration with Human Ecology Account Manager and other staff
  • Oversight of ECL staff spending on program-related items
  • Coordination with Facilities, Grounds, Custodial and other related departments to ensure appropriate safety, maintenance and upgrade of CCFS physical facilities
  • Ongoing assessment of adequacy of program’s equipment and materials and budgeting/collaboration/grant writing as necessary to replace and upgrade items

Staff (20%)

  • Primary responsibility for ECL staff, including hiring, orientation, coaching, supervision, evaluation, and coordination with Human Ecology personnel staff
  • Provision of pedagogical leadership to ECL teaching staff in their roles as early childhood educators and undergraduate student instructors
  • Planning and implementation of annual ECL staff orientation period, weekly staff meetings, parent-staff workdays and teaching staff professional development
  • Supervision of and collaboration with CCFS Administrative Assistant

Children and Families (20%)

  • Administration of child enrollment process, including responsibility for enrollment decision-making and communication with applicant families
  • Development and supervision of parent orientation, participation and education programs for ECL families
  • Mentoring of staff in establishing effective partnerships with families
  • Liaison responsibilities with families in interpreting programs and policies, building a supportive community, and addressing concerns as they arise
  • Service as the liaison and resource for the ECL Parent Committee
  • Consultation with staff, parents and community experts on referrals for services for children with special needs

Outreach, Service and Professional Competence (10%)

  • Participation in various local, regional, national and university groups and initiatives to support young children and their families, such as the Chancellor’s Child Care Advisory Committee, Yolo County Child Care Directors Association, and the National Coalition for Campus Children’s Centers
  • Outreach and professional contributions to child development field as an expert consultant, evaluator, and trainer in areas of early childhood program quality, early learning standards, early childhood development and curriculum and teacher training
  • Hosting and interpretation of program to community observers and other guests
  • Participation in professional development activities, including conferences, courses, colloquia and policy briefings to maintain and contribute to current knowledge of the ECE and child development fields and its policy and practice implications
