Position description

The Office for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and the UC Davis School of Medicine Dean’s Office are recruiting for an Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Learning Communities. This is an administrative and faculty position for an INTERNAL candidate in the UC Davis School of Medicine – the existing faculty appointment would be at the Associate or Full Professor level in an academic faculty series. The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Learning Communities is an administrative effort commitment of 40% and 60% effort will be committed to the academic faculty appointment.

The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Learning Communities provides leadership to build a diverse and welcoming learning environment and culture, infuse belonging and inclusion efforts in all aspects of student experiences, and attend to issues of intersectionality within and among students. Success in this area requires attention to integrating and ensuring that there are relevant learning environments for diverse students, residents and fellows as well as identify opportunities for interprofessional collaborations between diverse student groups in both the School of Medicine and School of Nursing to better serve our patients and communities.

The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Learning Communities reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion with dotted line reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serves as an essential member of the School of Medicine’s leadership team. The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Learning Communities functions as a collaborative colleague with the Vice Dean for Education, Associate Dean for Admissions, the Associate Dean for Students, the Associate Dean for Workforce Innovation and Community Engagement, the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, the Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Education, the Assistant Dean for Medical Education, and the School of Nursing Associate Dean for Diversity.

The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Learning Communities provides leadership to a range of administrative, academic, and technical professionals in the Office of Student and Resident Diversity who provide comprehensive student support services.

The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Learning Communities will serve as:
• a member of the Office for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Senior Leadership Group and the School of Medicine Education Dean’s Council.
• a representative on the Student Affairs Committee, as an advocate and support person when requested for students with academic or professionalism actions.
• a liaison between the Student Diversity Advisory Committee and the Schools of Health administrative leadership team.
• a leadership advisor to the Diversity Student Interest Groups.
• a representative in disciplinary proceedings that involve medical students and residents.
• a representative of the UC Davis Health leadership team at medical student and trainee events, especially for those related to students and trainees that are under-represented and/or from disadvantaged backgrounds.
• a lead and collaborator on student-driven and departmental events related to diversity and inclusion initiatives.
• a member of the School of Medicine Admissions Committee, participating in the review and selection process for UC Davis School of Medicine medical students.
• support and mentor for pre-health students as they pursue professional school admittance, especially nursing and medicine.
• a leader, partner, and School of Medicine representative in the LCME accreditation process, specifically to ensure compliance in the diversity and inclusion LCME content.
• a representative of the Office for Student and Resident Diversity on local, regional and national committees for medical students, residents and fellows; and
• a partner with the Associate Dean for Students and the Associate Dean Diverse and Inclusive Education in tracking and providing an annual report on cultural mistreatment, such as microaggressions, blatant racist acts, and racist sentiments that negatively impact the learning environment.

The Associate Dean collaborates with faculty, students, trainees, and administration to promote a safe and inclusive learning environment for trainees, to instruct workshops and lectures that promote equity and inclusion in medical education, support timely response to emerging issues on behalf of trainees from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds, and contribute to the recruitment efforts of applicants from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds. The Associate Dean enthusiastically and expertly collaborates to advance the culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion to reinforce our aspirational goals of equity in all aspects of education, science and healthcare.

Qualifications and Application Requirements:

The candidate must have earned an MD or DO in a relevant field; possess a California Medical License; be an Associate or Full Professor in an academic faculty series in good standing in the UC Davis School of Medicine; at least three years of experience in leading efforts that bring diverse communities together; administrative leadership experience at an academic institution; demonstrate commitment to the value of diversity, equity and inclusion; possess effective communication skills; and have the ability to represent the School of Medicine at the local, state, national, and international levels.

The preferred candidate will have knowledge and experience in the use of effective strategies to promote inter-professional education, educational scholarship, an appreciation of rapidly evolving trends in health systems science, and patient-centered care and a commitment to educating and supporting students and trainees that are from under-represented and/or disadvantaged backgrounds.
