POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Project Scientist provides significant, original, and creative contributions to research projects. She/he contributes to writing of grant proposals and publications, but is not required to develop an independent research program. Generally, the appointee is expected to have a broad range of knowledge and competency. The appointee will manage activities in a research lab or oversee the execution of subcomponents of a larger project, usually under a Principal Investigator. Teaching is not required in this position, but university and public service is encouraged at higher ranks.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

I. RESEARCH (90%)
This candidate is required to contribute to a research program on the ecology and conservation of fishes in the San Francisco Bay-Delta and its watershed, with an emphasis in on the movement, behavior, and physiology of native fishes. The candidate may design and execute both field and laboratory data collection, including propagation and husbandry of bay-delta fish species such as sturgeon, salmon, and their predators, as necessary. The candidate will develop research within an interdisciplinary framework, translate findings to regulatory and management agencies, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

The candidate will be expected to:

  1. Devise and conduct studies to determine: A. The ecologically relevant effects of multiple stressors facing on native fishes of the San Francisco Bay-Delta and its watershed, with an emphasis on evaluating effects of aquatic contaminants and/or thermal stress on survival, growth, behavior, and physiology. B. The behavioral and/or physiological response of sturgeon to dams and water export facilities. These studies will have application to the development of protective criteria at water diversion points, and design criteria for upstream passage facilities.
  2. Collect, summarize, and analyze data. The researcher will use standard analytical approaches including generalized linear and additive hierarchical models, machine learning techniques, etc., using R statistical software.
  3. Publishing. Publish research results in prestigious peer-reviewed journals as lead and senior author. Leading journals might include Fisheries, Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Marine Ecology Progress Series, Journal of Fish Biology, Environmental Biology of Fishes, and Journal of Applied Ichthyology.
  4. Reporting. Prepare technical reports to support collaborations with non-profit and agency partners (e.g., DWR, CDFW, USBR).
  5. Grant Acquisition & Management. Significantly contribute to the development of proposals and research plans resulting in the acquisition of state and federal funding to support an independent research program in fisheries science and conservation.

Other research duties include:

  1. Manage all research projects and budgets according to sound management principles.
  2. Supervise employees paid to work on funded researcher projects.
  3. Write and submit progress reports to funding agencies to satisfy grant requirements.
  4. Train, consult with, and advise graduate students, post-baccalaureate, and researchers with experimental design and data analysis of studies conducted in fisheries and aquatic ecology.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)

The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to her/his specific field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and give research presentations at national and international scientific meetings. When appropriate, the candidate may be requested to coordinate seminars and laboratory meetings.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)

The incumbent may assist in training or mentoring of other junior scientists or project personnel or participate in university or other groups to improve equity and inclusion in the sciences.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• A PhD Degree in Aquatic Science, Animal Physiology, Ecology or appropriate related field by start date.

ADDITIONAL (met by the start date of the position):
• Experience in laboratory and field research projects involving aquatic biology, fisheries, physiology, toxicology, natural resource management, biotelemetry, and/or related subjects.
• Experience in writing both proposals and research publications (peer-reviewed and broader audience).
• Aptitude in communicating and extending technical information.
• Interpersonal skills to interact with diverse groups of individuals to facilitate collaborative research, provide information, resolve problems, and increase cooperation among individuals.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate via writing and orally.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Potential to accomplish team-based research and education programs in aquatic ecology.
• Experience in effectively and productively interacting with multiple researchers and stakeholders.
• Expertise in statistical and graphing programs such as R, Sigmaplot.
• Evidence of collaborative, interpersonal- and communication- skills.

SALARY RANGE: Salary dependent upon candidate’s qualifications/experience.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: 100% for one year (starting ASAP) with the possibility of extension dependent upon progress and funding.
