Dr. Lisa Miller at the California National Primate Research Center seeks to fill a full-time research assistant position at the Junior Specialist level starting August or September 2020. The successful candidate will work on studies examining tobacco smoke exposure to investigate early life pathogenesis of COPD.
Essential Responsibilities (90%)
A. Assist with research activities relating to the experiments with a mouse model of tobacco smoke exposure to investigate early life pathogenesis of COPD by working closely with a graduate student researcher, under the direction of the PI and staff research associate 2. The position will be evaluated by performance of the following:
1) Assist with ordering and husbandry of mice for experimental tobacco smoke studies.
2) Assist with ordering of supplies and managing inventory for mouse tobacco smoke studies.
3) Prepare solutions, medias, and buffers as needed for mouse tobacco smoke studies.
4) Assist with maintenance of equipment and lab spaces for mouse tobacco smoke studies.
5) Acquire biological specimens at necropsy (lung, blood, lymphoid organs) for mouse tobacco smoke studies.
6) Conduct molecular and cellular assays with biological specimens collected from mouse tobacco smoke studies.
7) Maintain laboratory and animal records associated with mouse tobacco smoke studies.
8) Compile research data, perform statistical analysis, and generate graphics of data analysis for mouse tobacco smoke studies.
9) Present findings from mouse tobacco smoke studies in local group meetings.
10) Contribute to the drafting/editing of manuscripts and research reports resulting from mouse tobacco smoke studies.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% EFFORT)
A. The incumbent will present outreach research for local stakeholder groups, regional meetings, and appropriate national meetings. Presentations will be delivered in poster and/or oral presentation formats. The incumbent will be encouraged to have membership with the American Lung Association or similar professional society.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)
A. The incumbent will work with University technicians and researchers to communicate research findings by attending informal meetings and provide summarized unpublished research results as appropriate. The incumbent will work with department-wide safety officers to assist in dissemination of new laboratory and/or departmental safety policies. As a public service, the incumbent will also be encouraged to deliver oral presentations at public events, such as those held by local conservation organizations, tribal groups, and state or federal agency working groups. As a full time lab member, this position includes responsibility for maintaining safety standards and meeting regulatory requirements, staff training and mentoring (undergraduate student technicians), and general laboratory maintenance. Participate in activities of CNPRC committees that are relevant to this position.
• Measles vaccination or proof of illness required. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
• Employee shall participate in required preventative medical and medical monitoring programs which may include blood tests, immunizations, TB screening, Blood borne and Airborne Pathogen training, etc., and are provided to meet Federal, State and University requirements.
• Must be willing to perform assigned duties in a BioSafety Level (BSL) 2 or 3 facility where nonhuman primates may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous infectious agents such as HIV, SIV or Herpes B virus; working area is located within a defined animal area and may include biohazards.
• Work in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present.
• Required to wear protective clothing in circumstances that require personal protection from infectious diseases and animals.
• Work occasional overtime. Work occasional weekends and holidays.
• Provide after hours, weekend and holiday emergency support as required.
