Position description

The Office for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and the UC Davis School of Medicine Dean’s Office are recruiting for an Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Education, this is an administrative and faculty position for an INTERNAL candidate in the UC Davis School of Medicine – the existing faculty appointment would be at the Associate or Full Professor level in an academic faculty series. The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Education is an administrative effort commitment of 40% and 60% effort will be committed to the academic faculty appointment.

The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Education provides leadership to design, implement, and sustain equitable pre-medical and medical education through oversight of the Office of Student and Resident Diversity pathways programs and partnership with the School of Medicine leadership. Success in this area requires integrating and ensuring that there are relevant learning environments and curriculum that is accessible and relevant to diverse students, residents and fellows as well as expansion of pathways programs.

The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Education reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion with dotted line reporting to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serves as an essential member of the School of Medicine’s leadership team. The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Education functions as a collaborative colleague with the Vice Dean for Education, Associate Dean for Admissions, the Associate Dean for Students, the Associate Dean for Workforce Innovation and Community Engagement, the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, the Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Learning Communities, the Assistant Dean for Medical Education, and the School of Nursing Associate Dean for Diversity.

The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Education provides leadership to a range of administrative, academic, and technical professionals in the Office of Student and Resident Diversity who provide comprehensive student support services.

The Associate Dean for Diverse and Inclusive Education will serve as:

  • a member of the Office for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Senior Leadership Group and the School of Medicine Education Dean’s Council;
  • a leader and partner to the Office of Medical Education and the Committee on Educational Policy to support a curriculum reform that is accessible and relevant to diverse learners;
  • a member of the School of Medicine Learning Climate Committee;
  • a co-facilitator and partner with the Associate Dean for Curriculum to participate in the process of curriculum review, development and implementation to integrate health equity, diversity and anti-racism into curriculum;
  • a representative in disciplinary proceedings that involve medical students and residents;
  • a representative of the UC Davis Health leadership team at medical student and trainee events, especially for those related to students and trainees that are under-represented and/or from disadvantaged backgrounds;
  • a leader, partner and School of Medicine representative in the LCME accreditation process, specifically to ensure compliance in the diversity and inclusion LCME content; and
  • a representative of the Office for Student and Resident Diversity on local, regional and national committees for medical students, residents and fellows.
  • a partner to the Associate Dean for Students with the Associate Dean Diverse and Inclusive Learning Communities in tracking and providing an annual report on cultural mistreatment, such as microaggressions, blatant racist acts, and racist sentiments that negatively impact the learning environment.

The Associate Dean enthusiastically and expertly collaborates to advance the culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion to reinforce our aspirational goals of equity in all aspects of education, science and healthcare. The Associate Dean collaborates with faculty, students, trainees, and administration to:

  • provide oversight for the Office of Student and Resident Diversity pathway programs including: K12 Outreach, Medical School Preparatory Enhancement Program, UC Davis Pre-Health Conference, Post-baccalaureate Program
  • Collaborate with the Heath Equity IOR to create/expand anti-racism & health equity curriculum thread.
  • ensure the education programs in the School of Medicine are accessible and relevant to diverse learners;
  • promote a safe and inclusive learning environment for trainees;
  • instruct and ensure the offering of workshops and lectures that promote equity and inclusion in medical education;
  • support timely response to emerging issues on behalf of trainees from under-represented and disadvantaged backgrounds;
  • contribute to the recruitment efforts of applicants from underrepresented and disadvantaged backgrounds.

As an academic faculty member responsibilities include: clinical service in the area of specialty, as applicable; teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows; conducting and producing scholarly work, clinical/translational research; a record of peer-reviewed publications; success in obtaining extramural funding, as applicable; and University service. All responsibilities will be further determined based on faculty series.

Qualifications and Application Requirements:

The candidate must have earned an MD or DO in a relevant field; possess a California Medical License; be an Associate or Full Professor level in an academic faculty series in good standing in the UC Davis School of Medicine; at least three years of experience in leading education programs; administrative leadership experience at an academic institution; demonstrate commitment to the value of diversity, equity and inclusion; possess effective communication skills; and have the ability to represent the School of Medicine at the local, state, national, and international levels.

The preferred candidate will have knowledge and experience in the use of effective strategies to engage in education reform to specifically address the needs of diverse learners, educational scholarship, an appreciation of rapidly evolving trends in health systems science, and patient-centered care and a commitment to educating and supporting students and trainees that are from under-represented and/or from disadvantaged backgrounds.
