Position description

The Department of Evolution and Ecology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for one Assistant Project Scientist (60% variable) in the Begun lab.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Assistant Project Scientist will work on computational analysis of population genomic and comparative genomic data from Drosophila. The candidate will be responsible for leading multiple projects relating to population genomic and gene expression variation in multiple Drosophila species. The candidate will perform analyses using next-generation sequencing data, including analysis of sequence variation data (SNP and structural variation), analysis of transcriptome data (including single-cell transcriptome data), and sequence divergence analysis. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for the integration of these data with genome annotation, and population genetic, comparative, and statistical analysis to infer the evolutionary processes and mechanisms leading to variation and divergence. In addition to utilizing standard sequencing platforms and analysis pipelines the candidate will be responsible for the design and implementation of new analysis pipelines as required. The candidate is expected to be sufficiently competent to carry out projects in a near independent capacity and to contribute to the training of other lab members in computational biology and statistics. Strong interpersonal skills, organizational abilities, mentoring capacity, and leadership qualities are essential for this position. The candidate will summarize data, prepare figures, and take a significant role in writing manuscripts for publication. The candidate will communicate regularly with the Principal Investigator and present their work at lab meetings and at local and national conferences.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualified applicants must have a Doctorate in Science (PhD) in biology or computational biology. Successful applicants will be well versed in state-of-the-art approaches for computational and statistical analysis of high throughput genomic data. In addition to using available computational pipelines the applicant must be familiar with one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, Perl, C++) as well statistical programming (R, SAS). Qualified applicants will be familiar with comparing genomic data from multiple species and using genome annotation in these analyses. Experience with multiple library types (e.g., single-end, paired-end, pooled data sets, long read, and single-cell) as well as experience with large data sets is required. Finally, qualified candidates will have a background in Drosophila population genomics or Drosophila comparative genomics.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Published track record of experience in computational biology as applied to Drosophila. Experience working on long-term projects independently with minimal day-to-day supervision. Experience developing computational pipelines for genomic and transcriptomic analyses.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in training and supervising graduate students.

SALARY RANGE: Step 1-3 $60,600-67,300 (100% annual rate; position will be 60% variable), commensurate with qualifications and experience.
