The Department of Public Health Science, Division of Health Informatics at the University of California, Davis, is seeking (1) 50-100% Project Scientist. The purpose of this position is to make significant creative contributions to research or creative projects associated with consumer health informatics. The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.
I. RESEARCH (80%)
Research Activity (80%)
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active health informatics research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of Drs. Nick Anderson, PhD, and Katherine Kim, PhD, MPH, MBA, FAMIA. The candidate will help to determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigators. He/she will design specific projects, including the selection of appropriate methods and techniques. The candidate is expected to supervise students, technicians, fellows, and research coordinators regarding the technical aspects of the research, including methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results and planning follow-up experiments. Studies will include but not be limited to clinical informatics, consumer health informatics and technology-supported citizen science with a special emphasis on underserved populations, health disparities, and international comparative studies in these fields.
Future studies may also include studies of consumer and mobile health policy and systems. Methods used will include but not be limited to human centered and participatory design, stakeholder engagement, systems for collection and analysis of clinical/electronic health record and person-generated health data such as symptom science, and a variety of mixed-method health informatics and citizen science techniques. Candidates are expected to keep current in these fields and attend courses, seminars, and scientific meetings to learn new methods and keep up with advances in these fields.
Though not expected at the present time, the candidate may be involved in technology assessment that might require specific expertise, or with piloting processes. The candidate may also play roles in helping to initiate studies on technology innovation and technology acceptance, and data governance and ethical, legal, social implications of technology.
The candidate will publish research results in peer-reviewed journals either independently or in collaboration with the PIs or other members of the research team. The candidate will help with data acquisition, qualitative analyses, health informatics analyses, statistical analyses, and other functions necessary for publication by the candidate and other members of the group. The candidate will assist with literature review for each publication, and with either doing the initial draft or participating in editing manuscript drafts from others in the group.
Grant Acquisition (10%)
The candidate will assist in writing proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations. The candidate will prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies. The candidate will interact with funding agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (20%)
The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his/her specific field of health informatics and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE
The candidate is encouraged but not required to participate in service activities such as presenting research results to the general public, community engagement and citizen science in research, and providing service to the university

• PhD in Health Informatics, Nursing, Public Health or related field
Completion of postdoctoral appointment in area of specialization, as applicable, or substantial professional experience in clinical informatics or consumer health informatics.
• History of participation in extramurally funded informatics research
• Experience of clinical informatics within a academic health system.
• Demonstrated ability to write scientific reports and has successfully published research findings in high impact-factor journals.
• Demonstrated technical competency in a variety of qualitative and quantitative research techniques and protocols.
• Clinical training as evidenced by professional degree, e.g., MD or BSN/RN
