Junior Specialist – Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

NATURE AND PURPOSE
This position provides research support to the laboratory of Dr. Imran Khan in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for research on immunodiagnostics for human and animal diseases. This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in molecular and cellular biology as related to infectious diseases and cancer.

The position of Junior Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. Junior Specialists are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. Junior Specialists are also expected to participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations as well as review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications as applicable related to their research area of expertise.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE

I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (80% EFFORT)
A. Work under the direction of the Principle Investigator or senior laboratory personnel on research projects. Collaborate with personnel affiliated with research activities involving immunoassays (e.g., western blots, ELISA, multiplex assays), gene cloning, extracting RNA, DNA and protein from cell lines and tissue, conducting standard assays such as PCR, culturing mammalian cell lines, preparing samples for genomic and proteomic analysis, and other such laboratory duties as may arise. Responsibilities include keeping track of laboratory supplies, maintaining a database of all laboratory supplies and purchases, and maintaining detailed inventory and freezer logs of laboratory reagents/materials. The candidate will follow standard operating procedures and maintain a clean and orderly working environment in the laboratory and will help or aid other lab members in the performance of their work.
• Evaluation of performance in research activities is subject to the applicable individual project in specialized areas, as documented by any of the following:
• Publications that acknowledge the Junior Specialist's significant and meaningful contribution to the work.
• Publications on which the Junior Specialist is an author.
• Other evidence (e.g., letters from collaborators or principal investigators) that work done by the Junior Specialist contributed to publishable research.

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10% EFFORT)
• The incumbent will have opportunities to develop presentation abilities in laboratory meetings and the departmental meeting and other on-campus events.
• The incumbent will be encouraged to read appropriate literature and discuss during laboratory meetings.
• The incumbent will be encouraged to have membership with appropriate societies and participate in appropriate meetings and groups on-campus.

III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10% EFFORT)
• May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.
• Mentor-ship of undergraduate students including summer interns in the Dept. of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, as well as rotating biomedical students.

Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor degree in biological sciences or a related field with previous laboratory course experience.
• Must have basic level understanding of Biological Sciences
• Must have demonstrated proficiency with bench science activities, including but not limited to: pipetting, dilution preparation, specimen handling, accurate measuring of chemicals, etc.
• Must be willing to work with biohazardous materials, and biologicals.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Respond timely to email and voicemail messages.
• Attentive and reliable with various modes of communications (email, calls, texts, etc.)
• Possess good inter-personal skills and be capable of working with a variety of personalities
Understanding of University procedures and policies for working with biohazard, and chemicals, and their disposal.
• Ability to abide by safety regulations. Able to safely work with chemicals, tissue fixatives, dry ice, and liquid nitrogen
• Previous experience in immunoassay development (e.g., ELISA) is helpful.
• Knowledge of immuno and nucleic acid multiplex assays
• Ability to coordinate with coworkers with a wide range of professional backgrounds and to communicate professionally and effectively
• Flexible to changing demands of research tasks
• Professional approach to work and attention to detail

Salary:
Step I - $40,700 Annually, 100% FTE

Number of Positions Available: 1

Term of Appointment:
One year with possibility to extend. Non-Exempt appointment based on the needs of the research project. 100% Appointment.
