Description

An Assistant Project Scientist position is available in the Lab of Dr. Richard Michelmore at UC Davis . The Michelmore laboratory operates out of the UC Davis Genome Center, a state-of-the-art genomic research facility, https://michelmorelab.ucdavis.edu/ .

NATURE AND PURPOSE

The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal Investigator status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.

Working in the Michelmore Lab at the UC Davis Genome Center, this position will involve planning and execution of experiments pertaining to the development and application of bioinformatic approaches/pipelines to characterize oomycete pathogens. This position requires coordination of multiple projects with internal and external collaborators, as well as the preparation of research proposals, reports, and manuscripts related to these projects. Computer infrastructure maintenance duties may also be performed.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

RESEARCH (90%)

Research Activities (80%)

This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of a research program focused on bioinformatic methodologies to characterize oomycete pathogens with an emphasis on agriculturally consequential phenotypes. The scope of the studies may include a wide range of computational approaches including but not limited to genome assembly, gene expression analysis, evolutionary analysis of plant-microbe interactions, and genetics. This candidate will also provide leadership, supervision, and training for students and other laboratory co-workers in bioinformatics for diverse projects on the lab.

Publications (5%)

The candidate will interact and collaborate with on- and off-campus researchers to initiate and complete projects involving the above-mentioned activities. The results of this research is expected to be published in a peer-reviewed journals relevant to the project involved.

Grant Acquisition (5%)

Assist in securing extra mural funding. Prepare and present reports to the funding sources (both written and oral).

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)

The candidate will attend and participate in professional society meetings, seminars, and conferences relevant to his or her work. The candidate is expected give presentations at conferences, seminars or educational functions, and lab meetings, as well as review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise

UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)

The candidate is encouraged to engage in public outreach and university service activities such as presenting the scientific research to the general public, guest lecturing, and committee service. May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies and other external groups in issues related to areas of expertise.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Ph.D. and substantial postdoctoral experience in relevant field.
  2. Expert in computational biology and bioinformatics methodologies.
  3. Expert in the use of databases and computer tools for genome analysis.
  4. Extensive experience in oomycete genomics.
  5. A strong publication record in these areas.
  6. Substantial experience working with high performance computing clusters.
