Position description

Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies Archivist

UC Davis Asian American Studies, Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies
UC Davis Library, Archives and Special Collections

Overview of Position

The Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies Archivist is a two-year Librarian Series appointment responsible for the management of the Welga Digital Archive of the Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies (BCFS). Duties include collection development, collection processing, metadata creation, exhibit curation, instruction, digitization, and digital preservation. The Archivist is also responsible for community outreach and promotion activities that increase awareness of Filipino American history and the Filipino Diasporic experience, including conducting oral histories and making them accessible. As an additional project, the Archivist will take the lead in creating a database to catalog historical Filipino American sites in California. This is a temporary position with a two-year term that may be extended for a limited time should BCFS secure additional funding.

Reporting to the Head of Archives and Special Collections in the UC Davis Library and coordinating with the BCFS Director, the Archivist will build on existing collaborations between the library and the BCFS, working 80% of time in the BCFS and 20% of time in the library’s Archives and Special Collections department.

The Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies

The Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies (BCFS), under the directorship of Dr. Robyn Magalit Rodriguez, is hosted by the UC Davis Asian American Studies Department. The BCFS draws its mission from the life’s work of the activist, worker, and writer Carlos Bulosan. The Center supports UC Davis scholars researching and teaching about the Filipino experience in the United States, abroad, and in the Philippines. The BCFS advances the production and dissemination of knowledge about the Filipino experience and history by creating a community of support for Filipino Studies scholars, researchers, and educators. Its programs are driven by close collaboration with community-based organizations. The BCFS is especially focused on addressing the experiences of the most marginalized, underserved, and vulnerable groups in the Filipino community.

The Welga Digital Archive, now a centerpiece of the BCFS, was initially founded to promote Filipino American labor history, specifically the history of Filipino American involvement with the UFW movement and the Delano Grape Strikes. Through the acquisition of archival collections, the conducting of oral histories, and the digitization of its holdings, the scope of the Welga Digital Archive has expanded to a focus on Filipino American political and social activism.
