The Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior, in the College of Biological Sciences, University of California, Davis, invites applications for an Academic Coordinator (50%) position in the IMSD program.
NATURE AND PURPOSE
Academic Coordinators are appointees who administer academic programs that provide service closely related to the teaching or research mission of the University. This service may be provided to academic departments, to organized research units, to students, or to the general public. Determination of the appropriate level for an appointment for an Academic Coordinator shall take into consideration such factors as program scope and complexity. The duties of an Academic Coordinator are primarily administrative. Individuals in an Academic Coordinator title who are assigned research or instructional duties are required to hold a dual title.
The Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) T32 program aims to identify and train underrepresented, disabled and socioeconomically disadvantaged students to become part of the next generation of research leaders and innovators in biomedical and behavioral sciences. The 50% Academic Coordinator position in the College of Biological Sciences, Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior (NPB), will assist with coordination and management of this NIH-funded T32 training program. This T32 is in its first year of funding and was originally funded as an R25 which has had 22 years of continuous funding. The training program is administratively housed within the NPB Department in the College of Biological Sciences. The grant will be submitted for competitive renewal in Winter 2024 and the coordinator will have a major responsibility in supporting this submission. This T32 provides funding for 10 predoctoral trainees in their first year of graduate school. This training program requires support from the academic coordinator for program development and implementation, compliance monitoring, and supervision and submission of yearly evaluation and progress reports.
I. COORDINATION OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS (40%)
Responsibility for the administration and coordination of the IMSD Training Program.
Curriculum and mentoring responsibilities - This category includes coordinating core training activities with the Training Program Directors, members of the Program Executive Committee, and faculty trainers; informal mentoring of graduate student trainees, including helping trainees plan research presentations, additional training activities, travel to scientific conferences, and other related activities.
Program administration and management - The academic coordinator works with the T32 Director(s) to coordinate assessment of the training program; drafts annual reports to the National Institutes of Health and other reports, as needed; provides major support for the writing and preparation for training-related grant applications; organizes research seminars, workshops, conferences, and an annual retreat sponsored by the training program; and monitors the training program budget.
Outreach - The academic coordinator has major responsibility for coordinating recruiting and admissions activities for the training program, including recruitment of under-represented minorities. In addition, the academic coordinator represents the training program at national meetings and conferences; acts as a liaison with other T32 training programs at UC Davis and nationally; and coordinates training activities with other UC Davis units, state and federal agencies, and non-governmental organizations. The academic coordinator also will manage and maintain the training program web page.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)
The academic coordinator will participate in professional and service activities as needed, including attending conferences.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
The candidate will participate in the administration of their units and the University through appropriate roles in governance and policy formulation. The candidate will participate in service activities on University committees. In addition, they may represent the University in their special capacity as scholars during the discharge of their responsibilities.

• Strong organizational skills
• Attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and execute primary support responsibilities
• Effective interpersonal communication skills to maintain an effective, positive and cooperative relationship with staff, students, faculty, co-workers, public and outside contractors
• Ph.D. or other appropriate degree preferred
• Familiarity with NIH training grants
• Experience writing progress reports
• Experience administrating an academic program
