UC DAVIS GENOME CENTER
Supervisor: Dr. David Segal
Junior Specialist – Molecular Biologist

In direct collaboration with the Principal Investigator(s), this position will be involved in the Angelman syndrome research project, which focuses on developing therapeutics based on gene and epigenome editing tools to treat Angelman syndrome and related neurologic disorders.

RESEARCH (85%)

The candidate will specifically participate in the development and testing of novel molecular constructs based on CRISPR/Cas9 to cause persistent epigenetic changes in gene expression. The constructs will be tested in cell culture and animal models where appropriate. As a member of the research team, work will include construction of molecular clones, RNA extraction, RT-qPCR, DNA Sequencing (Sanger and next-generation sequencing), ChIP-PCR, bisulfite sequencing. Additionally, the candidate will be exposed to technical, scientific and organizational aspects of laboratory function.

The candidate will prepare manuscripts for publications, in collaboration with her/his direct supervisor. Manuscript preparation by the candidate will include reviewing the relevant literature and summarizing these reviews in the introduction, describing results and methods used to acquire the results, presenting and analyzing data obtained by the candidate, constructing clear and informative figures, interpreting the results and discussing how they fit in the current understanding of the field. Depending on whether the candidate is first or middle author of the manuscript in preparation, she/he will contribute these items for most of the manuscript or only the part contributed.

As a member of the laboratory, the candidate will act as a fully integrated lab member and therefore also participate in routine laboratory tasks that ensures the well-function of the lab as a whole. This could include some of the following: i) inventory, stock and ordering of laboratory supplies and reagents, ii) researching and obtaining bids for new equipment or repair, iii) helping coordinate and organizing laboratory activities such as meetings and common experimental activities.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE (10%)

Depending on interest and availability of funds, the Junior Specialist will have opportunities to present research findings to a larger audience at scientific conferences or meetings. The candidate will also assist the investigator in presenting progress reports and final summaries to granting agencies.

UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)

The Junior Specialist will participating in training activities, such as mentoring undergraduate students. They will actively contribute to lab activities via meetings and unit/campus presentations.

REQUIREMENTS:

BS/BA in Genetics, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or related field. Experience with molecular cloning and mammalian cell culture is required. Experience with gene editing, genomic techniques or bioinformatics is strongly desired.
