Assistant/Associate Professor of Clinical Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care or Health Sciences Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care

SALARY: Dependent on qualifications and experience
START DATE: July 1, 2020
QUALIFICATIONS: Veterinarian with advanced training in small animal emergency and critical care. Completion of a residency program approved by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) by the effective date of appointment is required; ACVECC board certification is preferred. Clinical experience and competence in small animal emergency and critical care (SAECC) medicine is required. Demonstrated aptitude/experience in teaching is required. For the Assistant/Associate Professor of Clinical SAECC position, a documented record of creative scholarship or the potential to develop a clinical research program in the discipline is required. Must possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere.
A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in California is required before employment begins (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals without a full California license must obtain a University License (California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1) by the time of appointment.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical: The position has a 70% (Professor of Clinical series) or 90% (Health Sciences Clinical Professor series) clinical effort assignment to the SAECC service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). The individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students, house officers and technicians; providing health care and service to patients; and advising and consulting with referring veterinarians and clients.
Teaching: The primary teaching responsibility will be to direct daily supervision and instruction of senior DVM students and house officers rotating through the service. Other responsibilities include: 1) participation in lectures and/or laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum; 2) participation in all aspects of the didactic and clinical (resident) training program of the VMTH; and 3) continuing professional education. Must demonstrate excellence in teaching.
Professional Competence: Advance the discipline and develop a reputation for clinical excellence within the VMTH, as well as locally and nationally, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. Expected to establish a reputation for clinical excellence locally, regionally and nationally. Must demonstrate clinical competence and be recognized for accomplishment in a focused area of clinical practice.
Creative Scholarship: Faculty in the Professor of Clinical series are expected to advance the clinical discipline through the creation and dissemination of new knowledge with documentation by peer-reviewed publications. Creative/scholarly activities are required for individuals in this series. The type of scholarly activity may focus primarily on integrating/improving clinical care, conducting clinical research studies, and/or improving veterinary medical education.
Although creative scholarship is an expectation for faculty in the Health Science Clinical Professor series, it is typically derived from clinical teaching and professional service activities. Examples of activities qualifying as creative scholarship in this series include participation in the advancement of professional education; publication of case reports or clinical reviews; development of or contributions to administration (supervision) of a clinical service; or development of or contributions to clinical guidelines or pathways.
Service: University and public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, continuing education and other appropriate means is required.
