Overview of Position

The Library of the University of California, Davis, seeks a creative, versatile and enthusiastic librarian to work closely with undergraduate and professional students, instructors and staff, and institutional stakeholders in a highly interdisciplinary academic community. Reporting to the Head of Student Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing user instruction, research assistance, and outreach with a focus on promoting undergraduate and professional student academic success and life-long learning in STEM disciplines. The successful candidate must be able to collaborate effectively to deliver library services and outreach aligned with the University Library’s mission, vision and strategic priorities.

The Library is building a team of intensely collaborative, forward-thinking colleagues dedicated to providing excellent services to our students, researchers, faculty, and community members in a rapidly evolving information environment. The successful candidate will be well-grounded in information literacy concepts, pedagogy and teaching best practices, committed to problem-solving in collaborative and significant ways for the Library and library users, and able to develop innovative solutions to complex problems.

Position Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Head of the Student Services department, the incumbent will:
• Deliver responsive, innovative instructional and information services that support the needs of the undergraduate and professional students with a focus on STEM disciplines
• Cultivate and maintain strong collaborative relationships with instructors, staff and other campus partners; maintain an understanding of the undergraduate and professional teaching programs in the STEM disciplines; and promote library activities and services within the UC Davis community
• Enhance the Library’s existing outreach initiatives, expand information literacy instruction programs for undergraduate and professional students, and provide research consultation services
• Create online research guides, instructional videos, tutorials, or other digital learning objects and instructional support materials overseeing
• Collaborate in developing new initiatives and partnerships to further student success and for lifelong learning
• Prepare reports and analyses regarding ongoing services and special projects, including the collection and interpretation of data that inform decisions and demonstrate the Library’s value to the UC Davis community and beyond.
• Participate in professional development activities as appropriate to meet both individual goals as well as departmental goals and objectives.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
• As an academic appointee engages actively in pertinent ongoing research, scholarship, or creative activity and/or teaching.

UC Davis librarians are expected to participate in Library and system-wide initiatives and activities, work comfortably in a collegial environment, and to be active professionally. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions.

Required Qualifications for the Position

• Masters in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent
• One or more years of recent experience in supporting the research and learning needs of undergraduate and/or professional students
• Evidence of knowledge of pedagogical theory and/or instructional methods as well as of current and emerging trends in instructional and research support services for undergraduate and/or professional students
• Demonstrated experience creating online research guides, instructional videos, tutorials, or other digital learning objects and instructional support materials
• Evidence of ability to work effectively and collegially to develop and implement responsive and/or innovative library instruction and information research services
• Evidence of ability to work collaboratively with library colleagues and partners within the library and across the campus
• Evidence of flexibility and initiative when working within a fast-paced and rapidly changing setting.
• Evidence of effective use of analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
• Demonstrated commitment to professional development
• Ability to meet the University of California criteria for advancement and promotion within the Librarian Series

Preferred Qualifications for the Position

• Undergraduate or higher degree in the sciences or at least one year experience as a STEM librarian in an academic library
• Working knowledge of Canvas or other learning management systems
• Experience with curriculum mapping or other program-level assessment initiatives
• Experience with first-year experience courses and/or delivering library services to traditionally underserved students
• Evidence of commitment to fostering an inclusive environment
• Evidence of professional engagement, such as membership in a professional organization or committee service, and/or a record of accomplishment such as presentations at conferences, publications/creative activities or teaching consonant with an academic appointment
• Record of accomplishment in research, scholarship, or creative activity and/or teaching consonant with an academic appointment

Salary and Benefits

Rank and salary: Assistant Librarian, Salary Point 1, $55,014 to Associate Librarian, Salary Point 10, $77,787. (Appointment rank and salary based on qualifications and experience.)

The incumbent will be a member of the LX Collective Bargaining Unit represented by the University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT).

Benefits: The University of California is one of the largest employers in California, and offers outstanding health and retirement benefits to its employees and their families. Librarians are academic appointees and earn 24 days of vacation and 12 days of sick leave per year. In addition, there are 13 university holidays.
