The Department of Cell Biology and Human Anatomy at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, seeks to hire 1-2 full-time employees as a Junior Specialist in Dr. Tarantal’s lab. Positions will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions related to gene therapy, somatic cell genome editing, and with a range of stem and progenitor cell populations including pluripotent stem cells.
The Junior Specialist will collaboratively and creatively conduct experiments using molecular and cell biology techniques and other related genomic-related strategies. Other general responsibilities include: reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results; participating in the submission of journal publications on relevant topics. The ideal candidate will have very strong and demonstrated interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
Successful candidates are expected to participate in three major categories of activities listed below:
1. RESEARCH (90% EFFORT)
The Junior Specialist is expected to work closely with the Principle Investigator (PI) to carry out experiments. Findings from these experiments will be presented at national conferences and published as peer-reviewed research article(s) in internationally recognized scientific journals. Assist the PI and senior management team in implementing study protocols and collecting and interpreting data. The Junior Specialist is expected to study the current literature and attend scientific conferences, think critically, and meet with the PI on a routine basis as well as communicate regularly on plans and progress by email.
The Junior Specialist will outline and draft a manuscript with supervision from the PI. The Junior Specialist will also prepare figures and tables for the manuscript. The Junior Specialist will meet with the PI to discuss revisions and then modify the manuscripts accordingly. In the manuscript, the Junior Specialist will articulate the significance of the work and describe logically how the work helps move the field forward. Scientific and scholarly review of the literature will be performed through public databases, such as PubMed.
2. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% EFFORT)
Attend relevant annual meetings of national societies to present data in the form of posters or oral presentations. Assist with drafting of manuscripts for publication.
3. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)
Assist with journal clubs and other activities related to the School of Medicine Stem Cell and Gene Therapy Programs.
• Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences and/or Cell, Developmental, or Molecular Biology or a related field with a minimum of 2 years demonstrated experience in laboratory research. Must have received bachelor’s degree prior to start date.
• The ideal candidate must have strong interpersonal, communication, and team-based skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Full-Time (100%) appointment. Initial appointment is for 6 months; reappointment is pending satisfactory performance, needs of the research project, and sufficient funding.
