Description

The Division of Hematology Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, UC Davis School of Medicine, invites applications for a Junior Specialist in the field of cancer biology. Specifically, in the study of sarcoma (connective tissue cancers). This work focuses on understanding tumor development, the biology of metastasis, and translational studies.

He/She will participate in publishable research focused on early tumor formation, growth, and metastasis in sarcoma. The studies will include both significant in vitro and in vivo components. For in vitro studies, basic molecular biology techniques will be utilized. This individual will be expected to perform various assays including investigations of proliferation and apoptosis, gene cloning, qRT-PCR, western blotting, tissue culture, lentivirus production and use, and organoid generation. For in vivo studies, once trained, this person should become proficient in rodent handling, injections, imaging, and survival surgeries.

The junior specialist will initially perform experiments under the supervision of the PI. They should familiarize themselves with the literature and current state of knowledge. They should be able to form scientific questions and hypotheses and develop an understanding of the experimental method and approach. He/she will be involved in the planning of experiments and understand the overall goals. In addition, they should have a working understanding of the techniques used and be able to modify protocols and troubleshoot as needed. After training, they are expected to complete experiments and execute protocols semi-independently.

The junior specialist will be expected to document all experiments carefully, keep the lab and their notebook organized, make figures and tables for presentation, and present in lab meetings. Additionally, they will be expected to present or generate a poster for on campus events and potentially national meetings.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining the daily functions of the lab such as ordering supplies, making buffers, restocking/aliquoting reagents, and assisting in compliance related tasks of the BUA (biosafety) and IACUC (animal care).

The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities and designated areas of expertise
Research in Specialized Areas (90%)

A. Work under the direction of the Principle Investigator on research projects. Collaborate with personnel affiliated with research activities involving sarcoma. Currently, little is known about the biology of sarcoma due to a lack of appropriate models for study. The lab will work to create new models of sarcoma formation and metastasis for further study. Evaluation of performance in research activities is subject to the applicable individual project in specialized areas, as documented by any of the following:
• Publications and presentations that acknowledge the Junior Specialist's significant and meaningful contribution to the work.
• Publications, posters, or abstracts ion which the Junior Specialist is an author.
• Other evidence (e.g., letters from collaborators or principal investigators) that work done by the Junior Specialist contributed to publishable research.

Professional Competence and Activity (5%)
• Participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations.
• Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to area of expertise.
• Attend seminars and symposiums offered by the Cancer Center

University and Public Service (5%)
• May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of various industry organizations, state and federal agencies, and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.
• Participate in activities of committees within the department, college, campus and other University entities, as appropriate.

Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, Genetics, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related field with a minimum of one-year experience in laboratory research.
• Requires demonstrated experience in in vitro and in vivo studies
• Ability to perform basic laboratory calculations required for making reagents and performing experiments

Preferred Qualifications:
• Preferred experience in molecular biology techniques such as cloning, PCR based assays, tissue culture, and western blotting.

Salary: Step I – $39,500 annually.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT:
Short-term 2-year maximum Non-Exempt appointment, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
