JR SPECIALIST- Dr. Brittany Dugger Lab
Responsibilities of this position will include planning, execution, and presentation of research on human brain focused on Alzheimer’s disease. A successful candidate will participate in lab activities, particularly around tissue-related technologies (including digital pathology), coordinate receiving biospecimens from multiple collaborating researchers, and maintain the databases. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills in communication and writing; as well as the ability to work independently or in a team. Will be expected to complete and maintain proficiency in human subject (HIPPA compliance and regulation) and lab safety/biohazard training.
General responsibilities could include:
Participate and be creatively involved in lab activities, particularly around tissue-related technologies (including digital pathology), coordinate and plan workflows to receive and process biospecimens from multiple collaborating researchers, and construct/maintain databases. The incumbent will be expected to produce contributions of a high academic caliber that will result in authorship on scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Journal of Alzheimer’s disease, Acta Neuropathologica, etc.).
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE (10%):
The incumbent will be focused on a specialized area providing technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment, or with research methods) in planning and execution of a research project. This will be done in collaboration with the PI (Dr. Dugger), and other faculty and staff in the adjacent Alzheimer’s Neuropathology lab.
The incumbent will actively participate in weekly meetings (including a didactive microscope session lead by Dr. Dugger) and will be required to attend a monthly Clinical and Pathological conference at the Lawrence J. Ellison Ambulatory Care Center in Sacramento. The candidate will also be required to attend other talks given by faculty, both on and off campus throughout the year, which will discuss current and ongoing research projects.
UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10%):
The Junior Specialist will be expected to provide mentorship to undergraduate research assistants that rotate through the lab as well as participate in educating the wider community. This includes the brains to classrooms program (presenting information about the brain to elementary students), undergraduate students coming from Edmondson Scholar’s, the Advancing Diversity in Aging Research (ADAR), and other such programs.
The incumbent will work under the supervision and report to Dr. Brittany Dugger in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
• Bachelor Degree with a major in neurobiology, biological sciences or a related field
• Previous demonstrated experience working in a research laboratory
• Proficient computer skills including spreadsheet and database software
• Experience in project coordination
• Demonstrated ability to work independently,
• Ability to take initiative, make critical decisions and communicate ideas.
• Proficient in electronic data retrieval and database use for medical records and research studies.
Step I - $39,500 Annually, 100% FTE

One year with possibility to extend to two maximum. Non-Exempt appointment based on the needs of the research project. 100% Appointment.
