Description

The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist.

The position will involve interdisciplinary studies and clinical coordination for three separate clinical research studies. The Jr Specialist will be in charge of all patient engagements, recruitments, clinical data collections, and monitoring for the following studies:

  1. INfluenza Vaccine to Effectively Stop Cardio Thoracic Events and Decompensated Heart Failure (INVESTED) Trial: a 3-year multicenter study from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (local PI-Lopez). The patient recruitments for this study (target of 30 patients per flu season) are between July and December per year until 2019.
  2. Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) Biospecimen Core Coordinator: This coordination is supported by the Cardiology Division as a contribution to the inception of this new Institute. The Jr Specialist will be tasked with developing the infrastructure for biospecimen repository of human cardiovascular samples (i.e. cells, blood and tissues) and clinical data collections being used for the Cardiovascular Division and/or CVRI biobanks as well as for Dr. Lopez’s preliminary data to support NIH grant proposals.
  3. California Department of Public Health CV Prevention Forward coordinator: This project will survey and develop a CV preventive intervention in the Cardiology Division. Successful candidates will actively participate in basic and translational research studies associated to these three studies.

General responsibilities include: Developing and working on research projects under the direction of the principal investigator (Lopez). In this position, the Junior Specialists is responsible for recruitment and enrollment of cardiac patients at UC Davis. The individual will also coordinate and curate clinical electronic data, imaging and molecular data from databases. Additional responsibilities will include assisting members of molecular laboratories in transporting samples between Davis and Sacramento campuses, coordinating regulatory requirements and reporting progress to scientific team as well as regulators.

Junior Specialist are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. Also, participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations; and, review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to the areas of expertise.

University and Public Service: For Junior Specialists, University and/or public service will include committee service in the areas of safety, animal care, facilities, and mentorship of undergraduate and high school students.

Basic Qualifications: Bachelor degree in biology or in a related field with a minimum of two-year experience in translational research, patient recruitments, electronic medical records data extractions, laboratory experience handling biological samples, cardiovascular clinic experience. Successful candidates will also participate in health and/or biomedical education as well as rigorous research methodologies working with patients in groups.

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidates will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Other skills such as monitoring medical records, obtaining patient consent, drawing blood, processing samples to extract cells, proteins and nucleic acids are welcome.

Salary: Step I – $39,500 annually.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT:
Short-term 2-year maximum Non-Exempt appointment, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
