Position description

The Western Human Nutrition Research Center, affiliated with the Department of Nutrition at the University of California, Davis, is currently seeking a Junior Specialist, 50% time for duration of 12 months with the possibility of reappointment depending on funding.

Research (90%) - This position is located in the Laugero Lab and will be engaged in research as part of a human clinical research trial conducted at the Western Human Nutrition Research Center. The focus of the research is to investigate the cardiometabolic health benefits of consuming sweet cherries. The Junior Specialist will use their academic and professional expertise to make scientific contributions to the research study and will contribute to published research. The complexity of the study is such that the Junior Specialist will work with a team of people, including the PI, on effective planning and execution of the research project. The Junior Specialist will be actively engaged in general study management and coordination, including help with constructing standard operating procedures, recruitment, screening, dietary assessment, and consenting of study participants, coordinating study test visits, and data collection from human study participants such as anthropometrics, body composition, vascular function, blood pressure regulation, cognitive function, and inflammatory and stress related factors linked to cardiovascular disease risk. The Junior Specialist will help collect data following IRB-approved protocols and established methods and procedures. Data collection, summary and reporting will be ongoing and will utilize various tools such as MS Excel and RedCap. Protocols for data entry, data quality assurance, and reporting will be developed and followed. The Junior Specialist will work with laboratory support personnel to accomplish analytical testing of biological specimens, and will integrate data collected by collaborators and co-investigators into the overall data set.

Professional Competence (5%) - The Junior Specialist will participate in lab meetings. The Junior Specialist will conduct literature searches for articles relevant to the research topic, will engage in discussions of data with the Principal Investigators and, when needed, will contribute to manuscript preparation and presentation of research findings.

University and public service 5% - The Junior Specialist will be involved in mentoring undergraduate students and interns in the Laugero lab.
