The Department of Environmental Science and Policy in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Environmental Policy with an emphasis in Environmental Justice. This is an academic year (9-month), tenure track, Assistant Professor position that includes an appointment in the California Agricultural Experiment Station (AES). Faculty members who hold an Agricultural Experiment Station appointment have a responsibility to conduct research and outreach relevant to the mission of the California Agricultural Experiment Station. Participation in outreach programs and performance of University service are also expected.
The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program to address critical or emerging issues in environmental justice. Preferred applicants will use quantitative methods to study the distributional effects of environmental policy and/or the equity and fairness of environmental policy processes. The applicant should be engaged with core normative, theoretical, and empirical debates about environmental justice that span the social and natural sciences. Topic areas could include energy, transportation, climate change, air, water, land use, conservation, agriculture, resource extraction, or other environmental challenges. Disciplinary background of the appointee is flexible, but could include political science, public policy, public administration, urban planning, geography, economics, sociology, anthropology, ecology, or law. The appointee will be responsible for teaching a new undergraduate course in environmental justice and a course that contributes to the department’s majors in Environmental Science and Management or Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning, as well as a graduate course for one or more graduate groups such as the Environmental Policy and Management program. The expected teaching load is 2.5 quarter-length courses per year, and specific course assignments will be made based on qualifications and department need. Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. This position is expected to collaborate with Cooperative Extension specialists and advisors, non-governmental organizations focused on environmental justice, and other appropriate public stakeholders.
This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in political science, public policy, public administration, urban planning, geography, economics, sociology, anthropology, ecology, law or a related field. Evidence of research excellence and advanced quantitative skills is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in environmental justice.
