The Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis, seeks temporary instructors to teach analytics consulting skills for the 2019-2020 academic year.
● BAX 461: Practicum Initiation
● BAX 462: Practicum Elaboration
● BAX 463: Practicum Analysis and Implementation
The industry project, or practicum, the backbone of the MSBA curriculum, spans the length of the program, from September through the following June. The goal of the practicum is to master analytics delivery by successfully applying quantitative methods and business knowledge to a real problem at a real organization. Working in a team, each student devotes, in an average week, one to two days on project-work directed by an MSBA Industry Partner (MIP). The BAX 46x course sequence supports and develops MSBA students’ consultative abilities and enables successful outcomes for partner organizations.
BAX 461 students begin by gaining knowledge and developing comprehension: framing and scoping the opportunity and its payoffs, familiarizing themselves with data, setting up an effective team structure and working protocols, and developing engagement with the MIP. Typical deliverables for the MIP include a data assessment and a statement of work (SOW).
In BAX 462, the learning focus shifts to application and analysis: understanding the business and technical requirement, and doing the modeling, computation and documentation. Typical deliverables include interim progress and recommendation reports.
The goal for BAX 463 is to demonstrate synthesis and evaluation: finalizing recommendations, communicating them to the MIP, and deploying the solution.
MIP expectations of deliverables vary by project, but typically include functioning software, data architectures, statistical models and algorithms, dashboards, metrics, and decision support tools.
Classroom “deliverables” in the BAX 46x seminar sequence - class activities, assignments, and the occasional homework - are designed to strengthen student skills so that they can do the best possible job on their project.
The catalog descriptions of the three courses are as follows:
● 461: Skill development around opportunity assessment, research methods, partner engagement, project management, team performance, needs elicitation, and oral and written communication.
● 462: Managing an analytics consulting engagement with emphasis on appropriate scope and definitions, data management and data engineering, statistical and technical analysis, and solution engineering. Knowledge development of analytics implementation practices across industries and professional roles.
● 463: Focus on completing promised project deliverables by polishing statistical and non-statistical quantitative analysis, generating insights for technical and business stakeholders, integrating proposed solutions into partner workflows and organizations, and disseminating the findings and outcomes through presentations and publications. This course culminates in a project presentation to key partner stakeholders.
Position responsibilities and expectations:
Lecturers are expected to rely on their expertise - either academic/research or practical/experiential - in one or more of the following areas:
● Persuasive communication
● Consultative client engagement
● Ethics, privacy and social impact
● Professional data science
● Personal performance
● Management of team projects
● Uncertainty and decision-making
Lecturers work in a team-teaching environment under the guidance of the lead instructor. Each lecturer leads 2-5 class sessions scheduled across the fall, winter and spring quarters.
Practicums vary across industries and application areas. All are intensive, requiring each student to devote 1-2 days per week to client-facing work and to the 46x coursework.
Class sessions take place on Saturdays, in San Francisco (not Davis), CA.
Each lecturer develops her or his lesson plan - in collaboration with the lead instructor - well before class, using an Active Learning framework. Classes typically require assigned pre-class reading/watching, in-class assessment polls and quizzes, and one or more major activities followed by discussion. Lecturing off slides is not expected.
Positions are contingent on funding and pending administrative approval. Salary is based on ability and experience. Applicants must have, at minimum, a terminal degree. Unit 18 Lecturers are governed under a collective bargaining agreement (American Federation of Teachers (AFT) - Non-Senate Instructional Unit).
