A post-doctoral position is available in the laboratory of Gail Taylor to work on the genetics and genomics of Cannabis sativa, developing pre-breeding resources and in understanding links between phenotype and genotype. It has been suggested that the global cannabis market may be valued annually at over $300 billion in coming years, as many US states and global nations de-regulate the use of this plant-based chemical for pharmaceutical and recreational use. Much remains to be discovered concerning the diversity of chemical signatures across the species of Cannabis sativa. In collaboration with our commercial partners, we will quantify the diversity of THC, CBD and terpene signatures across a wide range of cannabis plant material as a prerequisite for developing bespoke plant material for further discovery alongside pre-breeding material. You will be responsible for initiating a new research program, based in the Castroville Facility of our collaborator in California. This will include working on the biochemical analysis of widely sourced cannabis material, identifying new varieties for research purposes and initiating a pipeline of novel discovery towards commercialization. Experience of plant biochemical analysis, metabolic profiling, next generation sequencing would be welcome. A three year post beginning as soon as possible.

A PhD is required. Applicants should have training and experience in plant quantitative genetics, plant breeding, molecular plant breeding, plant biochemistry and metabolomics will be considered. Ability to deal with quantitative data, to undertake phenotyping and genotyping, with bioinformatics skills and database management is preferred. The successful candidate should be happy to work both independently and to interact with the commercial partner in Castroville. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and productive. Applicants with a proven record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and strong verbal and written skills are preferred.

Salary is based on years of experience as a postdoctoral scientists but will be a minimum of $50,760/year plus benefits. The successful candidate will be eligible for full benefits.
