The Project Scientist makes significant and creative contributions to a research or creative project in his/her academic discipline. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees with Project (e.g., Scientist) titles may engage in University and public service. They do not have teaching responsibilities; however, teaching opportunities may be negotiated with the Principal Investigator within the primary department or elsewhere on the UC Davis campus. Although the Project Scientist is expected to work independently under the general guidance of an academic member with an independent research program (i.e., Professor, Professional Researcher, Specialist in Cooperative Extension, etc.), he/she is not required to develop an independent research program or reputation. He/she will carry out research or creative programs with supervision by an individual in an academic title that carries with it automatic Principal status. The Project Scientist does not usually serve as a Principal Investigator but may do so by exception.


The candidate will make significant and creative contributions towards promotion of population health equity among vulnerable and medically underserved populations who are at increased risk for common diseases, including obesity, depression, cardiometabolic disorders, and cancer. The candidate will have expertise in translational research, data analysis and interpretation, synthesis of research data, and condensing research outcomes into manuscripts, presentations, and grant applications. The candidate will possess skills in the areas of organizing and managing research projects (i.e. collaborating with diverse groups of people including clinicians, research staff, scientists and statisticians, setting appropriate project milestones, and initiating relevant processes to accomplish goals), facilitating clinical trials (i.e. Institutional Review Board protocol development, HIPAA compliance), and rigorous data analysis methods (i.e. statistics and machine learning).

Research activity (70%)
The candidate will help determine research goals in consultation with the Principal Investigator. The candidate will work on projects in several research areas, including (1) characterizing co-occurring chronic disease risk factors for specific disparities populations (e.g., rural, minorities); (2) understanding the impact of early life exposures (e.g., prenatal, family, and community environments) on later life chronic disease risk; and (3) developing and testing remote delivery models (e.g. text, telephone) of personalized behavioral change interventions to reduce chronic disease risk. The candidate will work with both existing data sets (from the Principal Investigator and publicly available) and newly created datasets from observational and intervention studies. The candidate may be involved with supervision and mentoring of students, postdoctoral researchers, and research staff on topics such as methods development, trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results, writing abstracts and manuscripts, and planning follow-up work.
Publication (10%)
The candidate will publish research results in peer-reviewed journals, books and other outlets either independently or in collaboration with the PI or other members of the research team.
Grant Acquisition (5%)
The candidate will help the PI prepare proposals for funding from federal and other funding organizations. The candidate will assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies.

The candidate will participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to her specific field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate. The candidate will attend seminars to present research results and give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. (5%)
When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings, or educational functions. (5%)

The candidate will engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service.

Minimum qualifications:
PhD + 2-4 years of postdoctoral experience, successful publication record, statistical experience.

Preferred qualifications:
Experience with research on women’s health, chronic disease prevention, use of technology in research.
