Description

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis invite s applications for a qualified Junior Specialist.

RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (90 % EFFORT)
All ranks of the specialist series are required to be actively/significantly involved in publishable research activities as documented through publications or other methods. Specialists must be continuously and effectively engaged in research activity of scholarly quality and significance in the defined area of expertise and specialization.

Areas of research:
• The Junior Specialist will be involved in studies on the role of airway structural cells (epithelial cells and smooth muscle) in asthma, COPD and ACO. • The studies will also investigate cellular and molecular pathways related to glucocorticoid receptor function and the role of innate immune regulation

Specific Responsibilities:
• The Jr. Specialist will help with sample collection and processing from patients and research animals (mice and rhesus macaques). • Will help with purchasing supplies, follow-up with purchase orders • Will assist in database building (Excell) basic data analysis, generation of graphs (powerpoint and Prism) and help with research publications. • Will help maintain collected material in freezers • Will employ cell culture techniques for primary tissue cultures and in maintaining cell lines • Will manage colonies of mice with different genetic background (breeding and colony maintenance) • Will assist with with study design, data analysis, database generation • Help with lung function measurements in mice (FlexiVent technique) • Help with basic surgery and tissue collection techniques in mice • Utilize immunoloical techniques (ELISA, Western blot,FACS, immunochemistry)

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% )
Work with Dr. Angela Haczku to review and analyze data for presentation, publication, and grant submitting purposes
Attend and present at weekly lab meetings and additional meetings as needed.
Participate in journal paper reviews, Pulmonary Research in Progress meetings and local/national meetings to present research findings.

UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% )
Organizes lab meetings and teleconferences, journal club meetings and other group meetings.
Help with student and trainee orientations.
Attends the weekly seminar series (CCRBM Seminar series).

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, Genetic, Biology, Biochemistry,
Animal Biology or Biotechnology or a related field with previous laboratory course experience.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and use my terminological appropriately.
Strong oral and written communication, appropriate use of terminology.
Working knowledge and familiarity with spreadsheets.
Knowledge of HIPPA, ethical issues and writing the human subject protocol in conducting human research is also required.
Knowledge of IACUC animal protocols is required in conducting mouse and non-human primate models and studies.

Additional Qualifications :
Knowledge and experience in conducting basic laboratory procedures are required.
Knowledge in bioinformatics and statistical methods is desirable.
Serve as a research coordinator for projects conducted by the Pl, as resources
permit.
Responsible for ensuring uninterrupted communication between individual laboratories, data management, and preparation of reports tailored to meet the needs of the project.

Salary:
Step I - $40,700 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT:
Short-term 2-year maximum Non-Exempt appointment, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
