The Department of Cell Biology and Human Anatomy at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine, seeks to hire a full-time employee as a Junior Specialist in Dr. Sergi Simo’s lab. This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in developmental neurobiology. The goal of the Simo lab is to understand at the cellular level how regulation of signaling pathways by the E3 ubiquitin ligases control neuronal migration and position, and overall nervous system morphogenesis. neuron posits and regulation. Most importantly, this position requires a highly motivated, organized, and focused individual who is eager to learn and take initiative. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as to work independently and as part of a team.
Successful candidates are expected to participate in three major categories of activities listed below:
RESEARCH (80% EFFORT)
The selected candidate is expected to work closely with the principal investigator and other lab members on research projects related to neuronal development, neuron migration, and nervous system morphogenesis. The candidate will plan and execute experiments including maintaining and breeding mice, collect samples, perform immunohistological assays, image and record data, and genotyping.
The candidate is expected to collaborate with the PI using data from research projects he/she is directly involved in with peer-reviewed publications. Such journals include: Neural Development, Developmental Biology, Development, and Developmental Cell. The candidate will also play a key role in animal inventory and care, maintaining lab supplies, and general laboratory organization.
The candidate will participate in weekly lab meetings, departmental seminars such as Research in Progress seminars, and other relevant research seminars on campus. In these meetings, the candidate will: present his/her own research results or recent research journal articles relevant to the projects and/or engage in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (10% EFFORT)
In a later stage of employment, the candidate is expected to attend and present data in regional conferences or retreats with the topics on developmental neurobiology. Additionally, the candidate will assist the PI in reviewing research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to the area of expertise.
UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10% EFFORT)
The Simo lab has several undergraduate researchers and the incumbent will provide mentorship to these undergraduate students.
• Bachelor degree in Neurobiology or a related field. Must have received bachelor’s degree by June 30, 2019.
• Minimum of six months of research experience in a laboratory setting.
• Experience in mouse handling, mouse colony monitoring, and maintenance, histological techniques, and microscopy are required
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Full-Time (100%) appointment. Initial appointment is for 12 months; reappointment is pending satisfactory performance, needs of the research project, and sufficient funding.
