Assistant Director, Environmental Policy and Management Program
NATURE AND PURPOSE:
Academic Administrators are appointees who administer academic programs that provide service closely related to the teaching and research mission of the University. The duties of an Academic Administrator are largely administrative, although teaching and research responsibilities may be assigned. The Academic Administrator oversees complex units with a substantial amount of independence and works closely or jointly with faculty.
The Master of Science in Environmental Policy and Management (EPM) program (https://epm.ucdavis.edu) housed within the John Muir Institute of the Environment (http://johnmuir.ucdavis.edu) provides advanced training in applying environmental science to real-world environmental policy and management issues. The program leverages the position of UC Davis as among the world’s strongest campuses in environmental research and science. The program trains students in interdisciplinary analysis for applied professional careers in environmental policy and management. Graduates of this program are equipped to integrate technical and scientific expertise in a social-political-natural context to provide effective environmental policy and management solutions.
The Academic Administrator (AA) works closely with program faculty (Chair and Executive Committee) and staff (Graduate Program Coordinator) to administer the program. This team collaborates on program planning and strategy. The AA is responsible for program decision-making (along with the Chair and Executive Committee) and supervising the Graduate Program Coordinator. The AA also takes primary responsibility for coordinating courses. Occasional teaching and guest lecturing is required, depending on disciplinary background. A small portion of the position is also dedicated to university and public service.
I. ADMINISTRATION/MANAGEMENT OF PROGRAMS (90% effort)
The AA has responsibility for coordinating/managing elements of the program outlined below with the assistance of the Graduate Program Coordinator and in consultation with the program Chair and Executive Committee:
• Curriculum: coordinate core classes including the Policy Clinic and the identification of electives
• The AA will oversee 2-3 courses each academic year (https://epm.ucdavis.edu/program/core-courses), depending on disciplinary background, most likely within the following set:
ENV 203 – Environmental Policy Clinic: group projects (any policy/management discipline suitable)
ENV 297 – Professional Development Seminar
• Student recruitment: guide recruitment and admissions
• Student professional development: coordinate development and internship opportunities
• Student advising: coordinate faculty advising of students
• Program design/improvement: facilitate meetings with faculty Executive Committee and External Advisory Committee
• Finance: Assist chair in tracking program budget and planning expenditures
• Supervision: Supervise the Graduate Program Coordinator who communicates with prospective and current students and administers many program components
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% effort)
The AA will engage in professional activities in their disciplinary area through involvement in professional organizations or societies, engagement in continuous professional growth, or similar scholarly activities.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% effort)
The AA will participate in the administration of the unit and the University through appropriate roles in governance and policy formulation. The candidate may engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing.
