Position description

Within UC Davis, the Division of Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) is a $40M self-supporting academic division reporting to the Provost. The CPE team includes 210 academic and professional staff who collectively serve 60,000 learners from all 50 states and more than 100 countries each year. As the lifelong learning arm of the campus, CPE has one of the university’s most extensive educational portfolios, offering academic and non-credit professional certificates, on-campus programs for international students, contract programs for government and corporate clients, conferences and boot camps in a wide array of topical areas. CPE plays a critical role in advancing the university’s outreach mission in service of non-traditional adult learners, and serves as an innovation hub to pioneer new models that may be scaled across the campus.

Responsibilities:
The Associate Dean, Academic and Professional Programs is responsible for driving growth and innovation across the professional education portfolio, which includes a diverse array of programs delivered regionally, nationally and online. He/she directly oversees two large academic departments comprising 90FTE and generating $30M in revenue from fee-based open enrollment and contract programs. Programs span an array of topics, including business, technology, environmental management, land use planning, beer and winemaking, sensory science, healthcare and social services. The Associate Dean has responsibility for program innovation, strategic portfolio management, revenue generation, financial sustainability, academic operations, and human resources. Plays a major role, along with the Dean, in advancing major campus initiatives related in support of CPE’s strategic plan. Oversees the academic approval process on behalf of the Dean. Engages in system-wide partnerships, policy reforms, and other collaborative initiatives. With the Assistant Dean, Finance/Chief Business Officer, models new business initiatives, negotiates relationships, and liaises with major 3rd party partners (e.g., Coursera, Trilogy). Oversees training and mentoring of program staff to ensure strong capacity for program growth and optimization. Promotes and innovative, performance culture that is strategically aligned and goal oriented. Partners with the Associate Dean, International on efforts to globalize the division’s portfolio. Represents the Dean on campus committees and meetings (as needed). The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader and strategic thinker with strong political acumen, capacity to inspire and influence, and a demonstrated track record of innovating in a self-supporting context.

Minimum Qualifications: (must be attained at time of application)

  • Terminal degree.
  • 10 or more years of progressive leadership experience in continuing and professional education, including experience in a senior-level role.
  • Experience leading strategic planning and budgeting.
  • Experience leading the development of new professional programs serving non-traditional adult learners.
  • Experience in a self-supporting, entrepreneurial institutional setting.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of adult learning principles, and experience applying those principles to the design of high quality, innovative and engaging learning experiences.
  • Experience developing programs for multiple delivery models (online, ground, hybrid).
  • Experience developing business models and strategies for new program initiatives.
  • Demonstrated capacity for strategic thinking and planning.
  • Demonstrated capacity to present complex information in a manner that produces action and results.
  • Exceptional creativity and problem-solving skills to develop appropriate solutions to needs/problems.
  • Exceptional skill in navigating the campus environment, establishing partnerships, and negotiating business agreements.
  • Prior experience leading and managing academic and staff personnel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrable thought leadership in the field of continuing and professional education evidenced by involvement in conferences, journals, or other relevant outlets.
  • Prior experience in a public university-based PCO unit.
  • Prior experience developing, or partnering on the development of, degree programs.

Appointment/Compensation:
This is a full-time academic term appointment with an initial 1-year appointment, eligible for continued reappointment. Salary commensurate with experience. UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education is unable to sponsor a work visa (H-1B) to fill this position. Successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they are legally authorized to work in the United States.
