The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist.
The Junior Specialist appointee will be involved in studies focusing on questions in liver disease, natural history, and treatment. These studies will involve the participation in and coordination of activities between research collaborators at UC Davis Health System and collaborating sites.
RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (90%)
General responsibilities include assisting the Project Investigators in a literature review, experiment planning, and design, scientific documentation of the experiments/results and preparation of manuscripts for publication and grant proposals. The incumbent will specifically participate in two projects under the supervision of the PI:
PET imaging in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The successful candidate will coordinate and participate in the activities of a study aimed at understanding the effects of fatty liver on glucose metabolism in the liver and other organ utilizing dynamic PET imaging on the whole body PET imaging machine EXPLORER. The incumbent will be trained on the abstraction of data, data entry and analysis, patient recruitment, and regulatory/ethical requirements. The incumbent will work with research coordinators to recruit patients, collect and record data for the clinical studies, and generate monthly progress reports. They will be expected to formulate a research question that can be answered by the results from these data and participate in the analysis of data with a trained biostatistician while assisting in the writing of the manuscripts and abstracts.
Natural history studies of liver diseases. In this project, the incumbent will be involved in patient recruitment, the collection of biospecimens, and maintaining an accurate record of patient data. The candidate will work under the supervision of the investigators to ensure robust recruitment is met, analyzing data, and contribute to writing abstracts and manuscripts.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5%)
• Contribute to the PET imaging conferences by preparing and presenting results and attending the proceedings.
• Attend journal review, GI Research in Progress meetings, and local/national meetings to present research findings.
UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5%)
• Organizes meetings and teleconferences of PET Imaging and other groups
• Interact with patient advocacy organizations and organize local patient meetings.
• Bachelor degree in biological sciences or a related field with previous laboratory course experience.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and use medical terminology appropriately.
• Strong oral and written communication skills required.
• Working knowledge and familiarity with spreadsheets.
Knowledge of HIPPA, ethical issues and writing human subject protocol in conducting human research is also required.
• Knowledge and experience in conducting basic laboratory procedures, bioinformatics, and statistical methods are highly desirable.
Step I - $40,700 Annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT:
Short-term 2-year maximum Non-Exempt appointment, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
