Description

This position provides technical, scientific and organizational assistance to Dr. Amanda Finger’s research at the Genomic Variation Laboratory (GVL) in the Department of Animal Science, which focuses on population genetics of fish and wildlife species of interest. The research is designed to address ecological questions using a variety of genetic techniques. The research contributes to the generation of fundamental knowledge about these fish and wildlife populations. Many projects at the GVL also aim to inform the collaborating agencies of genetic information to consider when making management decisions.

Research
The Junior Specialist will be required to perform diverse molecular methods, maintain accurate and organized record of large datasets, and effectively allocate work time between diverse tasks. Resourcefulness, strong attention to detail, and the ability to adapt fluidly as research projects progress will all be important for success. The candidate should have an understanding of fundamental ecological concepts as well as basic genetic principles. Technical skills required include: DNA extraction, PCR amplification, fragment analysis, and gel electrophoresis.

The Junior Specialist will analyze data according to established protocols, and assist PI in formatting data for reports. Learn to utilize various data and statistical analysis software programs, including GeneMapper, Cervus, STRUCTURE, PmX, and GenAlEx. Keep detailed laboratory notebook documenting benchtop work. Write and edit Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s). Conduct peer-reviewed literature searches related to developing projects in the GVL. Collaborate with other members of the GVL, and other researchers when appropriate. Effectively communicate with all professional colleagues.
The Junior Specialist will be responsible for parts of laboratory management, including consistent maintenance of laboratory equipment, and general upkeep of laboratory space. Track inventory of all tissue and genomic DNA samples stored in the GVL using ItemTracker software. Help lab manager ensure that supplies are well stocked, and order supplies as needed, recording all expenses. Keep track of chemical and safety records.

University and Public Service
The Junior Specialist will participate in training activities, such as schedule, train and mentor undergraduate and high school student interns. Instruct and train graduate students, staff, and volunteers in laboratory procedures.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Genetics, Ecology or related field.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Demonstrated experience conducting scientific research including evidence of ingenuity, resourcefulness, and adaptability to special and changing needs of activities.
• Demonstrated experience multitasking, and fluidly switching between projects.
• Must speak and write fluent English.
• Willingness and interest to learn new techniques.
• Demonstrated computer skills in word processing, data analysis, and statistical software: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and troubleshooting experience.
• Demonstrated organizational expertise in maintaining records, ordering supplies, updating inventories, and safety records.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to work with a diverse team from different backgrounds and with varying skill levels for the purpose of assisting/teaching/mentoring laboratory members and student researchers in research protocols
• Ability to conduct library and database searches

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience using basic laboratory equipment, including: pipettes, centrifuges, thermocyclers, incubators, and fume hoods.
• Experience handling large datasets, preferably genetic data.
• Experience in sterile technique, preferably in molecular work.
• Familiarity with general research methods.
• Experience in inventory management.
• Ability to troubleshoot technical difficulties with laboratory equipment.
• Experience mentoring and training others.
• 1+ years experience with all the tasks described here within.

SALARY RANGE: Step I- $3,291.67 or Step II-$3,508.33 monthly commensurate with qualifications and experience.
