This position provides technical, scientific and organizational assistance to Dr. Anna Denicol’s research project to evaluate thermotolerance in dairy cattle during heat stress.
The Junior Specialist will be required to actively coordinate, conduct, and oversee field research, experiments, and make local field arrangements with farm collaborators. The Junior Specialist will also be responsible for data collection from farm records using specific farm management software, and data organization for statistical analysis.
The Junior Specialist will not be required to assist the PI in study design, but will be required to collect, organize, and summarize field and laboratory data. Evaluate data and prepare tables and graphs for publication. Calculate statistics as needed using SAS and/or Excel. Draft reports and sections of publications and presentations. The Junior Specialist will be required to contribute to scholarly manuscripts through reviewing and commenting on draft manuscripts, literature searches, data collection and scoring, and helping to write methods sections. Specifically the Junior Specialist will review and conduct peer reviewed literature searches relevant to scientific activities related to the project.
University and Public Service
The Junior Specialist will participate in training activities, such as schedule, train undergraduate student assistants. Instruct and train visiting scholars, graduate students, staff, and volunteers in laboratory procedures.

• Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science
• Valid California driver’s license.
• Demonstrated experience conducting scientific research including evidence of ingenuity, resourcefulness, and adaptability to special and changing needs of activities.
• Demonstrated experience with animal research, utilization of research animals, and understanding/compliance with animal care protocols and regulations.
• Demonstrated experience with dairy and beef cattle by means of internships of 6 months or longer duration;
• Experience in communicating successfully with farmers and farm workers;
• Willingness to travel in and out of state and spend up to 8 hours/day outdoors in Summer and Winter, as needed;
• Willingness and interest to learn new techniques and to work with cattle;
• Demonstrated computer skills in word processing, data analysis, and statistical software: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), SAS and/or Minitab and troubleshooting experience;
• Willingness to learn and master farm management software such as Dairy Comp 305 and PC Dart;
• Demonstrated organizational expertise in maintaining records, ordering supplies, updating inventories, and safety records;
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to work with a diverse team from different backgrounds and with varying skill levels for the purpose of assisting/teaching laboratory members and student researchers in research protocols and laboratory safety as well as coordinating student schedules with the needs of laboratory projects.
• Ability to conduct library and database searches and synthesize acquired knowledge effectively in writing and apply it to research processes;
• Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and carry short distances;
• Availability to work on nights/evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

• Knowledge of dairy farm management software Dairy Comp 305 and PC Dart
• Experience working on experimental and commercial cattle facilities.
• Experience collecting physiological samples for hormone assays, tissue collection, and necropsies.
• 1+ years experience with all the tasks described here within.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Short term, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments are 49%.
SALARY RANGE: Step I- $18.92 hr (49% appointment)
