Position description

The specialist will work on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, of which UC Davis is an institutional member. This is one of the premier particle physics experiments worldwide. This work, funded via Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory via the DOE, is of central importance for the design of the next-generation CMS semiconductor tracking detector for use in the upcoming High-Luminosity (HL-LHC) era.

The specialist will participate and lead activities in Prof. Chertok’s particle experiment detector mechanics lab in the Physics Department. The hire will fabricate and test structures composed of layers of novel materials such as carbon fiber, carbon foam, and aluminum nitride, bonded with high-conductivity epoxies. Thermal conductivity, tensile strength, and radiation damage testing will be performed, and the results analyzed and presented to a wider audience, including collaborators at Fermilab and elsewhere. The specialist will prepare and test loaded epoxy samples to improve thermal performance of these structures. The specialist will mentor the work performed by UC Davis undergraduates, and work with other personnel including technicians and engineers.
