Overview of Position

The Blaisdell Medical Library (BML) of the University of California, Davis, seeks a forward-looking and entrepreneurial professional to join our team in a two-year appointment as the Health Library Informaticist to advance efforts on the Sacramento UC Davis Health (UCDH) campus to improve discovery and use of biomedical and health data.

Reporting to the Head of BML, this position will take charge of coordinating information, resources, and efforts on the Sacramento campus for promoting biomedical data sciences information and educational resources, data management and data resource assets, and supporting institutions’ data science-related educational and translational health science missions.

As Health Library Informaticist, this position will be central to developing and supporting collaborations across UC Davis and, potentially, with outside organizations (e.g., NLM, NIH) in order to grow knowledge and skills around best practices for using data in a biomedical sciences environment for clinical, educational, and research activities. As a highly collaborative member of the BML team and dedicated to serving the needs of the health sciences community at the Sacramento campus, the incumbent will build and maintain alliances with others in the department as well as with other units (e.g., School of Medicine, Clinical and Translational Science Center, Health Informatics Program, Center for Data Science) to develop and coordinate projects.

UC Davis Blaisdell Medical Library and UC Davis Health

BML serves the clinical, research, and education needs of faculty, staff, and students in the life and health sciences programs of UC Davis Health (UCDH), comprising the School of Medicine, the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, a 619-bed acute-care hospital, and the clinical services of the UC Davis Medical Center (UCDMC) and the 1,000-member physician UC Davis Medical Group. In 2018, U.S. News & World Report ranked the School of Medicine among the nation’s top 10 schools for primary care training and the top 40 schools for research. The vision of the newly established Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing is to transform health care through nursing education and research. With annualized external research funding exceeding $300 million for 2018, UC Davis Health has nearly 1,000 basic science, translational, and clinical research studies underway, funded by federal and state governments, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, private foundations, and philanthropy. Position Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Head of BML and strategic guidance by an advisory group representing the UC Davis Library, School of Medicine, Clinical and Translational Science Center, and Health Informatics Program, the incumbent will:

• Evaluate, organize, and disseminate resources and tools related to discovering and accessing health sciences datasets, health science data management methods, and health data literacy training opportunities relevant to the missions of the Library, School of Medicine, Clinical and Translational Science Center, and UCDH.
• Create and update online content (e.g., tools, resources, instructional modules, best practices guides) around data-related topics specific to health sciences, including development of an online portal of open access biomedical datasets (developed at UC Davis or elsewhere) for use in education or translational research.
• Co-create and support communities of practice with current and emerging groups with shared expertise and interest in data science and health science research and training among the Center for Data Science, Clinical and Translational Science Center, School of Medicine, Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, and Health Informatics program focusing on consulting and advising about access to resources.
• Collaborate with the Clinical and Translational Science Center and the Library’s Data Science group to coordinate support of investigators and students seeking to develop research, proposals, or locate resources, and maintain tracking of all contacts and outcomes.
• Project management including regular deliverables for all above tasks, and gain strategic advisement on structure from the advisory group.
• At BML and also in coordination with the Clinical and Translational Science Center Evaluation group, explore and evaluate methods that demonstrate use and impact of resources and services (e.g., web analytics for online content, course attendance and feedback for any instructional coordination, etc.).
• Maintain active professional awareness of technology and practice trends and policy developments in academic and industry health library informatics related to health science research and training, and identify gaps and opportunities for health science data education and resources at UCD.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
• As an academic appointee engages actively in pertinent ongoing research, scholarship, or creative activity and/or teaching.

Required Qualifications for the Position

• Master’s degree in or equivalent educational/professional experience in a field appropriate to this recruitment, such as biomedical and health informatics, public health science, library and information science, science or health sciences education, or a related area.
• Demonstrated knowledge of open access and proprietary resources for national and international biomedical/health data management and use, including familiarity with quality assessment of such resources.
• Familiarity with trends and issues associated with the collection, analysis, access, management, and archiving of digital biomedical health and research data, as well as the principles of complex data documentation, metadata standards, and meta-analysis.
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills to clearly and effectively interact with multidisciplinary biomedical science groups to secure and provide information to clarify requests, resolve problems, and negotiate services and agreements.
• Demonstrated experience in building relationships, outreach, and cooperation and collaboration.
• Experience in independently managing projects and multiple priorities using effective problem-solving and analytic techniques and technologies.
• Awareness of data use licenses, dataset registration, and research data privacy policy associated with biomedical training and research (HIPAA, Common Rule).
• Demonstrated expertise in planning and maintaining web-based information resources.

Preferred Qualifications for the Position

• Academic or professional experience in a health sciences domain such as medicine, nursing, genetics, informatics, or biomedical information science.
• Project management and project evaluation skills.
• Familiarity with nuances of protected data and health sciences data, such as data management, security, and privacy issues.
• Knowledge of best practices in health sciences data management.
• Experience with or understanding of electronic health record systems (preferably Epic).
• Familiarity with medical terminologies, ontologies, code archival approaches and public data management standards.
• Web content management expertise, such as WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla.
• Record of accomplishment in research, scholarship, or creative activity and/or teaching consonant with an academic appointment.

Salary and Benefits

Rank and salary: Assistant to Associate Librarian ($57,686-$81,606). (Appointment rank and salary based on qualifications and experience.)

The incumbent will be a member of the LX Collective Bargaining Unit represented by the University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT).
