Position description

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, University of California, Davis invites applications for one Postdoctoral Researcher in Molecular and Cellular Biology.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The postdoctoral scholar will work on a project focused the molecular mechanisms of microtubule-based transport by dynein and kinesin motor proteins or other aspects of microtubule effector protein biology. The McKenney lab utilizes in vitro reconstitution, single molecule TIRF microscopy, biochemistry and cell biology, as a powerful combination to dissect molecular functions of microtubule associated proteins. We have a particular interest in the molecular mechanisms of molecular motor function and how they relate to human diseases. The specific project to be pursued will be developed jointly by the candidate and PI upon hiring. Postdocs will be expected to be proficient in the molecular cloning of DNA, recombinant protein production using a variety of expression systems (bacteria, baculovirus, mammalian cells), and ability to learn new techniques such as TIRF microscopy and microscopy image analysis. Additional duties and responsibilities include impeccable organization of notes, data, and analysis, presentation of data at weekly lab meetings, and basic lab maintenance jobs. Please see recently published research from the lab: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=mckenney+rj. https://biology.ucdavis.edu/people/richard-mckenney

In addition, the applicant should be proficient in molecular biology and/or biochemistry. The successful applicant will have experience with either 1) in vitro reconstitution using purified protein components and/or 2) biochemistry paired with quantitative cell biology. Finally, the applicant should be well versed in Microsoft Office, Excel, Powerpoint, a plasmid software such as Ape, and a data analysis programs such as Prism or R. The applicant should be attentive and reliable with various modes of communication (email, texts, Slack), and will have the motivation to pursue and drive a project independently.
