POSITION AVAILABLE: Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor of Community Practice
SALARY: Dependent on qualifications and experience
QUALIFICATIONS: Veterinarian with competence and advanced clinical skills in small animal primary care. Board certification or eligibility in a relevant specialty such as American Board of Veterinary Practitioners is preferred but not required. Clinical experience and competence in small animal primary care medicine, preventative care, general dentistry and general surgery are required. A demonstrated aptitude/experience in the principles of veterinary practice management is preferred. A demonstrated aptitude/experience with teaching, particularly clinical instruction is required. USDA accreditation will be required within one year of hire. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere are required. A minimum of 5 years of experience in veterinary primary care practice is required and greater than 8 years is preferred. A valid license to practice veterinary medicine in California is required before employment (California Business and Professions Code Section 4846-4857). Individuals not eligible for a full California license can obtain a University License (California Business and Professions Code Section 4848.1).
Clinical: The position includes a 90% clinical commitment to the Community Practice Service of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). The individual will be responsible for directing, instructing and supervising veterinary students; providing health care and service to patients; and advising and consulting with clients and other veterinarians. The individual is expected to demonstrate distinction in clinical practice.
Teaching: The primary teaching responsibility will be daily supervision and instruction of senior students in small animal community practice, including general medicine, routine dental treatments, and entry-level surgeries. Other responsibilities may include participation in a limited number of didactic lectures regarding wellness care, participation in laboratories in the DVM professional curriculum that relate to doctoring skills, surgical skills, and other clinical techniques; and contributing to the growth and development of an integrated community practice service that incorporates wellness, medicine, and surgery. The individual hired is expected to demonstrate excellence in clinical teaching. Applicants with experience in teaching at the staff, local veterinary medical association or community level are preferred.
Professional Competence: The individual is expected to advance the discipline of community practice within the VMTH, through participation and leadership in providing high quality patient care in the hospital environment. They are expected to work collegially with other services in the VMTH to reinforce the VMTH team environment, including offering referral of patients that could benefit from specialist care to the specialty clinic. Faculty are expected to attain specialty board certification within 5 years of hire and must demonstrate a high level of clinical/diagnostic competence and be recognized for accomplishment in a focused area of clinical or diagnostic practice.
Creative Scholarship: Faculty are expected to advance the discipline through creative scholarship which is typically derived directly from clinical activities and evaluated in the context of heavy clinical commitment. Contributions to creative scholarship may include contributions to professional clinical education, curriculum or training development, contributions to clinical service through program administration, enhanced clinical care, and community outreach, publication of scholarly work that advances the discipline and may focus on collaborative clinical research studies, or mentorship of residents in clinical research.
Service: The successful applicant will be required to participate in a limited amount of University and public service through committee work, with an emphasis on committees of relevance to the VMTH.
