Position description

The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis invites applications for a qualified Junior Specialist.

The position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on mechanisms in cardiovascular diseases.

Successful candidates will actively participate in basic and translational research studies in the regulation and mechanisms in cardiac fibrosis and arrhythmias using in vivo and in vitro models.

General responsibilities include:

Developing and working on research projects under the direction of the principal investigator. The main responsibility of the Junior Specialists in the lab will include working in a project to test the effects of environmental toxicants on cardiac fibrosis and cardiac arrhythmias using in vivo functional analyses and in vitro assessment using flow cytometry. The applicants will also assist in the development and analyses of in vitro and in vivo models of cardiovascular diseases using stem cells and gene-targeted mouse models.

Junior Specialist are required to be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities, including reviewing journal articles and engaging in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results. Also, participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations; and, review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications related to the areas of expertise. The ideal candidates will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills; as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

University and Public Service: For Junior Specialists, University and/or public service will include committee service in the areas of safety, animal care, facilities, and mentorship of undergraduate and high school students.

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor degree in biology or in a related field [with a minimum of two-year experience in laboratory and/or field research.

Successful candidates will also participate in veterinarian and/or biomedical education as well as rigorous research methodologies.

Excellent communication, social and organizational skills and the ability to work in teams effectively and interact with others are required.

Animal handling, genotyping analyses, flow cytometry, confocal microscopic imaging, western blot analyses, cell culture
Salary:

Step I – 39,500 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Term of Appointment:

Short-term 2-year maximum Exempt appointment, seasonal appointment based on the needs of the research project. Appointments may be made up to 100%.
