The University of California (UC), Davis, School of Medicine, department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology seeks to hire a full-time employee as an Assistant Project Scientist.
This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating topics relevant to the research area of host-virus interactions and evolution of those interactions, by studying viruses such as lentiviruses, cytomegaloviruses, and adenoviruses as well as animal models for both lentivirus and cytomegalovirus infections.
Basic requirements: PhD in the fields related to veterinary sciences, immunology, or virology. 4-5 years of research experience in working with human immunodeficiency virus, simian immunodeficiency virus, rhesus cytomegalovirus, regulatory T cells, and host-virus interactions. The candidate should have extensive experience in tissue culture work, flow cytometry, functional assays for T cell function, cell lines transduced with cloned TCRs, virus infection of primary and established cell lines, and titration of viruses using plaque assays. Excellent publication record and communication skills are required.
Preferred requirements: Experience in studying regulatory T cells in HIV-infected humans, regulatory T cells in SIV-infected macaques, and conducting pathogenesis studies in non-human primates are highly preferred. Strong experience of studying and manipulating innate immune cell receptors is highly preferred.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing strategies to test new hypotheses using cell culture models of infection and in vivo models of pathogenesis, primate immunology, as well as molecular biology approaches. The candidate is expected to design specific projects, including the selection of appropriate techniques, supervise students or technicians regarding the technical aspects of the research (i.e.: trouble-shooting problems, interpreting results and planning follow-up experiments), design and conduct a series of experiments to evaluate the contributions of immune cells to protection against disease, publish research in peer-reviewed journals either independently or in collaboration with the PI, or other members of the research team, assist in writing proposals for funding from federal and state agencies and other funding organizations, prepare and assist in the preparation of reports as required by granting agencies and prepare modifications of budgets and other grant components as needed, participate in professional societies and conferences appropriate to his/her research field and will serve as a reviewer of research proposals and scientific publications as appropriate, attend seminars to present research results and may give oral presentations to public and professional interest groups. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at seminars, laboratory meetings or educational functions, engage in public outreach activities that include presenting scientific research results to the general public and providing relevant advice to individuals and public agencies and engage in University service activities such as guest lecturing and committee service. Teaching classroom courses is not an expectation of this position.
