The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Animal Science with a preferred emphasis on the application of nutritional, physiological, or genetic strategies to improve animal production with the goal of enhancing the nutritional value of animal-sourced products (meat, milk, fish, poultry, eggs) for human consumption. The position is one of three positions sought to explore critical linkages between food production, food consumption, and nutrition of animals and human populations. This academic year (9-month), tenure track, Assistant Professor position includes the expectation of mission-oriented research and outreach in the California Agricultural Experiment Station.
The Department of Animal Science is seeking applicants that use animal nutrition, genetic selection, or applied physiological or molecular genetic approaches to research how animal-sourced foods might foster human health (i.e. prevent chronic diseases). Research topics could include developing new feeding strategies/sources, genetic selection to improve the nutritional quality of food products, or the use of genetic engineering/gene editing approaches to enhance the level of functional components in an animal-based food product. Research into contributions of animal-source foods in meeting the goal of nutrition security to promote good health and well-being is preferred.
The successful candidate will coordinate with existing departmental colleagues who have expertise in nutrition, microbiology, physiology, quantitative and molecular genetics, quantitative assessment of production systems, and other areas related to their field of research. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to collaborate with existing departmental colleagues with expertise in soil, water and atmospheric sciences and specifically with other colleagues in the Land, Air and Water Resources, Plant Sciences and Nutrition departments as part of the College Integrated Research and Education (CIRE-1) proposal entitled “Strengthening the Linkages between Agriculture and Nutrition”.
The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program in the broad area of enhancing the nutritional value of animal–based food products to address critical or emerging societal issues in human health and contribute to the strong theme of the department on environmental and social sustainability. The appointee will be responsible for teaching both undergraduate and graduate classes. These could include one section of the upper-division biochemistry series (ABI 102/103) or another advanced course such as ANS 100 (Animal Physiology) or AVS 103 (Avian Development and Genomics), a laboratory course or other undergraduate (ANS 2, Introductory Animal Science) and graduate courses related to animal agriculture within their area of expertise as assigned by the Chair. The typical teaching expectation is 2.5 courses per year. The appointee is also expected to advise undergraduates. Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service are expected. This position is expected to work with Cooperative Extension specialists and advisors, partners in allied industries or other appropriate public stakeholders.
