The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis seeks a visionary health care leader to serve as the Master of Health Services – Physician Assistant Studies (MHS-PAS) Program Director. The successful candidate will qualify for appointment as both a faculty member and the PA director. The PA director has the unique opportunity to participate in the implementation of a high-impact and interprofessional educational program.
One full-time, academic position at the assistant, associate or full professor rank in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor (HSCP) series is available in Sacramento, California. Faculty in this series play a key role in the further development of the interdisciplinary and interprofessional curriculum for the Master of Health Services – Physician Assistant Studies Program, as well as other teaching in additional clinical programs in the school.
Appointees to the HSCP series are expected to engage in teaching, clinical care activities, dissemination of scholarly or creative activity, as well as provide university and public service.

All candidates must either be a American Board of Medical Specialties or American Osteopathic Association specialty board certified allopathic or osteopathic physician or be a certified physician assistant (PA-C) and have a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., etc.) in a health-related field, and possess or be eligible for physician assistant licensure in the state of California. Applicants must be eligible to serve as a Physician Assistant Program Director per the ARC-PA national guidelines.
Candidates must meet the following qualifications to be appointed as program director:
- Meet the requirements of ARC-PA for PA directors nationally.
- Professional competence in primary care, physician assistant education and leadership preferred
- Experience with ARC-PA accreditation process
- Demonstrated proficiency in the teaching of students and creative teaching experience in an academic institution
- Experience in leading curriculum improvements and change as well as continuous quality improvement based on available evidence
- Excellent communication skills to effectively work with students, staff, faculty, medical director, patients and other professional colleagues as an effective interdisciplinary team member
- Experience in establishing and maintaining clinical partnerships and exercising creativity in problem solving and developing unique clinical partnerships
- Ability to adhere to university policies and procedures
- Experience working with diverse populations
Successful candidates should provide evidence of high-caliber performance as an educator and demonstrate experience in faculty evaluation, development and mentoring. A demonstrated commitment to diversity and success in promoting the education of students from under-represented groups is required. An understanding and appreciation of the unique opportunities and challenges of a MHS-PAS program housed within a School of Nursing is preferred.
EXPECTATIONS FOR THE PA PROGRAM DIRECTOR ROLE:
The program director reports to the executive associate dean, is accountable to the associate dean for clinical education and practice and is responsible for the clinical education and accreditation for the MHS-PAS program. The PA director is a member of the school’s leadership team and provides overall leadership for MHS-PAS program initiatives while seeking to achieve the school’s vision, its strategic growth and essential sustainability. The successful candidate should demonstrate a proven record of accomplishment for developing and nurturing imaginative partnerships to advance clinical and interprofessional education.
The successful PA director candidate is expected to provide effective leadership and management to ensure that the education of MHS-PAS program students is of high caliber and meets all accreditation standards. The director is responsible for coordinating faculty efforts to provide outstanding interprofessional academic learning experiences for students. The director also serves as an ambassador for the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis as well as engages in teaching in the MHS-PAS program, as well as in other programs within the School of Nursing portfolio. In keeping with the School of Nursing’s deep commitment to interprofessional education, this position works closely with the faculty leadership for the medical school and collaborates with the directors for the MS-Family Nurse Practitioner program and the Master’s Entry Program in Nursing.
The mission of the MHS-PAS program is to educate health-care professionals to deliver care as members of health care teams as well as to improve the availability of culturally relevant, primary health care in underserved populations throughout California.
