This position will be involved in interdisciplinary studies focusing on questions in Entomology, Plant Pathology, and Ecology. Successful candidates will also participate in greenhouse and laboratory studies that investigate the effects, if any, of antimicrobial peptides and other compounds on reducing titers of the bacteria thought to cause Huanglongbing (HLB), Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), in citrus; impacts on the vector competency of the insect vector of HLB, the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) in response to applications of antimicrobial compounds and other compounds; and assisting in testing other products that may be therapeutic for CLas and testing of prototypes of hand-held devices purported to detect the presence of CLas in a plant. General responsibilities include: providing expertise in the planning and execution of research projects within their area of expertise; staying apprised of emerging issues and problems, and taking appropriate actions to deal with the issues and/or problems; providing leadership, facilitating teamwork, developing collaborative relationships with colleagues, participating in research group meetings, and providing input into the planning of research programs; and assisting in the writing of research reports and publications. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (90% EFFORT)
A. Collaborate with PI and other researchers affiliated with research activities associated with the impact of antimicrobial peptides and other compounds on the HLB/ACP pathosystem, and testing of prototypes hand-held devices for detection of CLas. The candidate will conduct laboratory and greenhouse research on the effects of the antimicrobial peptides and other compounds on titer of CLas in plants, the impact of these compounds on vector competency and life history attributes of ACP. The candidate will also assist in the testing of various prototypes of hand-held devices for CLas detection, including validation and calibration of the device. Evaluation of performance in research activities or in outreach activities as deemed applicable to the individual project in specialized areas, as documented by any of the following:
1) Publications that acknowledge the Specialist’s significant and meaningful contribution to the
2) Publications on which the Specialist is an author.
3) Other evidence (e.g., letters from collaborators or principal investigators) that work done by
the Specialist contributed to publishable research.
4) Other evidence of recognized expertise may include formal documentation of intellectual
effort and participation in publishable research activities, first authorship on
presentation of research at regional meetings, and/or journal articles,
invitations to participate in research projects, and/or service on advisory panels.
5) Active dissemination of information through training, presentation or other means stemming
from the research
B. Serve as research coordinator for the studies conducted in the Contained Research Facility, and facilitate communication among the research partners in this project located at UCD and other institutions. Responsible for generating and coordinating the data generation in this project, data management, and preparation of reports related to the projects.
II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% EFFORT)
A. Participate in appropriate professional groups and other educational and research organizations.
B. Review journal manuscripts for the research group, and publications related to area of expertise.
III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (5% EFFORT)
May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of other university researchers and other external groups on issues related to area of expertise.
Master’s degree in either Entomology, Plant Pathology, Ecology or possession of a relevant baccalaureate degree plus three or more years of research experience in a laboratory or greenhouse on plant research projects.
