Assistant Professor of Wildlife Habitat Ecology

Title: Assistant Professor of Wildlife Habitat Ecology. The Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Wildlife Habitat Ecology. This is an academic year (9-month), Assistant Professor tenure-track position with teaching, research, outreach/engagement and service responsibilities and includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and outreach/engagement of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (https://aes.ucdavis.edu/).
The Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology is seeking applicants that focus on habitat ecology of vertebrate species at local, landscape, or regional scales. Research may focus on species, populations, communities and/or ecosystem level questions, but should include one of the following: 1) how vertebrates are distributed across space and time (within natural, agricultural, or urban landscapes, or across their interface), 2) which factors (intrinsic or extrinsic) influence vertebrate distributions, and/or 3) how habitats may be managed to promote biological diversity. Research areas that particularly concern the department include how anthropogenic factors – climate change, habitat conversion, and natural resource use patterns – influence wildlife distributions at multiple spatial and temporal scales, and how managers could mitigate such influences. Species distribution or niche modeling, spatial analytics, and ecological informatics are potential tools that could be used to better understand habitat ecology of wildlife. The successful applicant’s research program should further include application of satellite imagery, ground-based sensing technology, sophisticated mapping and modeling tools and software, and demonstrate strong computational abilities. The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program to address critical or emerging issues in wildlife habitat ecology.
The appointee is expected to demonstrate evidence of potential for excellence in teaching. The appointee will teach undergraduate courses related to wildlife habitat ecology and associated analytical approaches (e.g., GIS, species distribution modeling, conservation planning and decision support), consistent with the appointee’s expertise as assigned by the department chair. Additional teaching expectations include instruction focused on existing departmental courses, including field courses such as WFC 100 (Field Methods in Wildlife and Fish Conservation Biology). The candidate will contribute to the department’s mission, with departmental service, collaboration, and excellence in teaching all strongly valued. The appointee will be expected to participate in undergraduate and graduate advising and other responsibilities that are shared by department faculty. Participation in and development of outreach/engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. This position is expected to work with extension educators and partners in allied industries.
Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a biological discipline relevant to wildlife habitat ecology. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in wildlife habitat ecology.
