The Departments of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Environmental Science and Policy in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis announce an opening for a tenure-track/tenured assistant or associate professor position. We seek outstanding candidates with promising research programs in marine resource economics. This is an academic year (9-month), assistant or associate professor position with teaching, research, outreach/engagement and service responsibilities. The successful candidate will hold a 75% appointment in Agricultural and Resource Economics and a 25% appointment in Environmental Science and Policy.
The Departments of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Environmental Science and Policy are seeking applicants that focus on marine resource economics and policy analysis. Candidates’ areas of research should include conceptual, numerical, and empirical modeling of commercial fisheries, recreational fisheries, or aquaculture systems. The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program to address critical or emerging issues in the economics of marine resources, including climate change, food security, poverty alleviation, small-scale fishery management, rights-based policy reform, spatial policy modeling, and ecosystem-based fisheries management. The appointee will be responsible for teaching at the undergraduate, MS., and Ph.D. levels. Undergraduate teaching will consist of natural resource economics (ARE/ESP 175) with other possible courses including but not limited to econometrics (ARE 106), microeconomics (ARE 100A-B), and operations research (ARE 155). At the graduate level, the successful candidate will be expected to teach M.S. and Ph.D. courses related to natural resource economics (e.g., ARE 254, ARE 275, ARE 277). Teaching responsibilities will be set by the department chairs based upon departmental needs, expectations for teaching, and the successful candidate’s interests/expertise, and are reduced during the initial year on campus. Participation in and development of outreach/engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. Other responsibilities include student advising at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
The candidate should show an interest in working with Centers and Institutes on campus including, but not limited to, the Coastal and Marine Science Institute, the John Muir Institute for the Environment, and the Agricultural Sustainability Institute. The appointee is also expected to participate in UC Davis’ new NSF-funded interdisciplinary training program in Sustainable Oceans: From Policy to Science to Decisions. This position is part of the UC Davis “Sustainable Marine Resources Initiative (SMRI): The Future of Food from the Sea” hiring initiative that includes two additional faculty positions in quantitative fishery management and aquaculture biology, as well as additional hires in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
Ph.D. or equivalent degree by the time of appointment, in economics, agricultural economics, or a closely related discipline, including thorough training in economic theory and econometrics. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in marine and natural resource economics.
• Ph.D. or equivalent by the time of appointment, in economics, agricultural economics, or a closely related discipline, including thorough training in economic theory and econometrics
• Demonstrated expertise and research interest in marine resource economics with strong training in natural resource economics and integrated bioeconomic modeling.
• Demonstrated or potential ability to develop a distinguished policy-relevant research program that results in publications in high-quality refereed journals
• Demonstrated ability or potential to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and to present information to scientific and stakeholder audiences
• Demonstrated ability or potential and interest to advise undergraduates in the Managerial Economics major and the Environmental Policy Analysis and Planning major
• Demonstrated ability or potential and interest to mentor M.S. and Ph.D. students in the Agricultural and Resource Economics graduate program and the Sustainable Oceans Interdisciplinary Ph. D program.
• Interest, understanding, and commitment to fostering and contributing to diversity. Demonstrated ability to contribute to diversity and inclusion of groups that are underrepresented in the academy through extension education, research, and/or service would be a plus.
o Statements of Contributions to Diversity will be assessed by their general quality and the candidates’ awareness of, contributions toward, and plans for future efforts related to diversity and inclusion.
